The news just keeps getting worse for the Democratic Representative from New York, Anthony Weiner. Now even President Obama is saying if he were the embattled congressman, he’d resign. That’s gotta hurt.

Obama sat down with TODAY’s Ann Curry for a show that will air on Tuesday and Curry asked the president about the Weiner incident. “I can tell you that if it was me, I would resign,’’ Obama said.

“When you get to the point where, because of various personal distractions, you can’t serve as effectively as you need to, at the time when people are worrying about jobs, and their mortgages, and paying the bills — then you should probably step back.’

This is just one more voice from the left calling for Weiner to resign from congress. It is a mounting chorus that makes one wonder how he can ultimately resist.

For his part, Rep. Weiner has decided that he’s going to seek “treatment” for something or another. Apparently he’s a sex addict, or something. This is the last refuge of a scoundrel… well, a scoundrel with some level of power, anyway…. and one who’s a Democrat, as it were. No one in normal life would get away with this and no Republican would, either.

Obama isn’t the only one to call for Weiner to step down, of course. Democrat Tim Kaine also called for his resignation and Nancy Pelosi has basically called for him to step down. But, like always, Obama is bringing up the rear on this question. Yep, typically Obama leads from the rear.

Weiner is still claiming that he does not want to resign. In fact, he’s complained that he’d have no way to earn a living without being a congressman. I am glad that he thinks congress is there for him to make a living instead of to serve the people. But… you know.
