As Matt Welch says, this is woeful proof of the over militarization of our law “enforcement” community, but apparently a SWAT Team was called out to break down the door of a guy that was late on his student loans, all at the behest of the Department of Education!

Seriously! Who knew that the Dept. of Education could deploy stormtroopers?

Check out the dangerous police state we are creating…

STOCKTON, CA – Kenneth Wright does not have a criminal record and he had no reason to believe a S.W.A.T team would be breaking down his door at 6 a.m. on Tuesday.

“I look out of my window and I see 15 police officers,” Wright said.

Wright came downstairs in his boxer shorts as a S.W.A.T team barged through his front door. Wright said an officer grabbed him by the neck and led him outside on his front lawn.

“He had his knee on my back and I had no idea why they were there,” Wright said.

According to Wright, officers also woke his three young children ages 3, 7, and 11 and put them in a Stockton police patrol car with him. Officers then searched his house.

As it turned out, the person law enforcement was looking for was not there – Wright’s estranged wife.

“They put me in handcuffs in that hot patrol car for six hours, traumatizing my kids,” Wright said. […]

The U.S. Department of Education issued the search and called in the S.W.A.T for his wife’s defaulted student loans.

I fully agree with Welch’s conclusion about this:

A Department of Education that’s issuing search warrants is a Department of Education that deserves to be disbanded. A judge that approves a paramilitary-style dawn raid for a student loan search warrant is a judge that deserves to be disbarred. The police chief who authorized this use of force should be canned as well.

To that I say amen, brother!

I have been saying for several years that our so-called Law “Enforcement” community is rotting at the core. We are straying badly from a land of freedom to one of a police state. I won’t over state the matter and say we are as bad as any Soviet system, of course. It isn’t that bad, to be sure. But we are most certainly headed to a place where the police are NOT on the side of the people.

First we must dispense with the whole claim that they do, indeed, have “law enforcement” capabilities. Constitutionally they do not. In fact, the Supreme Court has stated several times that the police have no responsibility to stop or prevent crime. Our police forces across the country are only legally investigative agencies. Their only legal role is to investigate crime that has already occurred, to track down the perpetrators, to apprehend them, and then to get out of the way so the courts may settle the matter.

Police are not there to “prevent” crime. If their presence happens to prevent crime, that is nice, but it is only side effect of their being there.

But what we are seeing is our police forces across the country imagining that they have some sort of right to accost citizens at any time they feel like it. Guided by illicit government actions they are becoming an oppressive force, not an investigative one. It won’t be long until open gun battles open up between these stormtroopers and homeowners just trying to defend their rights. And at some point we’ll have to start siding with the homoweners, here! This is the dangerous situation these out of control courts and governments are creating.

Now, let’s be clear, it isn’t wholly the fault of the individual cops. They are being guided by power-crazed governments. But the sad case seems to be that these policemen are being used as the arm of an oppressive government whose main goal is to take money from the citizens.

From redlight cameras, to absurd seatbelt laws, to any manner of overreaching regulations, the police are being used to steal your money, folks. And they are increasingly doing so in paramilitary operations that trample all our rights.
