The United States Center for Disease Control made it official this week that Americans should prepare for a Zombie Apocalypse. Perhaps setting the stage for a CDC Zombie Awareness Month? Or maybe they′re just excited about Rob Zombie in Lords of Salem? On his CDC blog. Assistant Surgeon General Ali Khan provides tips for preparing Americans to survive a zombie invasion. Even the Wall Street Journal seems amused by this story! Dr. Ali Khan is the CDC Director of the Office of Public Health Preparedness and Response, or OPHPR, is also a Rear Admiral in the United States Navy.

As it turns out, May, 2011 is the fifth annual international Zombie Awareness Month. So playing on that theme, Dr. Khan blog of the CDC Zombie Apocalypse warning is a fun way to inform Americans on what sort of emergency supplies every household should have on hand. As well as how to plan for more run-of-the-mill emergencies, like tornadoes, earthquakes and hurricanes.

Khan begins by assuring citizens that if a zombie infestation did begin, the CDC would be right there, monitoring the situation, as with any disease outbreak. “CDC would provide technical assistance to cities, states or international partners dealing with a zombie infestation. This assistance might include consultation, lab testing and analysis, patient management care, tracking of contacts, and infection control (including isolation and quarantine).”

Of course, Dr. Khan advises citizens to have a stock of basic supplies, such as extra clothing, copies of important documents, food and water, along with a first aid kit, duct tape and a battery-powered radio. Such supplies should be portable and last you at least a couple of days, while you make your way to a zombie-free refugee camp. Too bad he doesn’t mention that you should also have some firearms to shoot the zombies in the head.

The CDC Zombie Apocalypse warning by Dr. Ali Khan is all good fun and helps brings home the point that everyone should have emergency supplies in the event of a sudden disaster. The United States Center for Disease Control is not implying that there is an eminent threat of a zombie invasion, but is just using this, International Zombie Awareness Month as a useful tool for education. That this may coincide with Rob Zombie appearing in Lords of Salem is merely good timing. Zombies are big again thanks to the AMC TV series, The Walking Dead, and widespread zombie-mania that appears on college campuses nationwide. Dr. Khan′s advise on dealing with a Zombie Apocalypse works equally well with any other sort of emergency, such as tornadoes, hurricanes, and earthquakes.
