Oops! During a Republican gathering in New Hampshire featuring Mitt Romney, Tim Pawlenty, Herman Cain and Michelle Bachmann as speakers, Romney made a gaffe which could cost him dearly. Referring to how in 1980, Ronald Reagan hung the Misery Index around Jimmy Carter, Romney said “Well, we’re going to have to hang the Obama Misery Index around his neck.” Romney then realized the imagery of his statement, of hanging a black man, and back-peddled immediately adding he was speaking “metaphorically”.

In this highly divisive, vitriolically charged political environment we find our nation in, where any criticism of Barack Obama, even his seeming dependency on using teleprompters, is being painted as racist by Democrats and their allies in the Media, one can only imagine how this will gaffe by Romney will be played. Was it racial? No! Was it poor judgment and should have been deleted from his prepared speech? Yes!

Mitt Romney has been struggling during this early phase in the 2012 presidential campaign. For much of the past 2 years, he has had to distance himself and redefine the Massachusetts version of health care, whom many see as a model of the current Obama program. Many social conservatives have had issues for the former governor, too. Then there is the whole Mormon-thing which does not play well for Romney in Southern States which are the must-win backbone of the GOP.

These were all roadblocks for Mitt Romney in 2008, when he bowed out of the race earlier after Senator John McCain began to build momentum. Now, while there are many who believe that Romney would play well against Obama in 2012 on economic issues, even that ground appears to becoming shaky and muddied. Donald Trump is already calling him out as not being all that very successful of a businessman. Others have made similar charges, pointing to his company and their method of targeting troubled businesses, buying them, gutting them and selling off the rest for profit. His hedge fund credentials also may not play well in the general anti-Wall Street/Financial sector atmosphere.

The fact that Mitt Romney is a favorite of the Republican Establishment may be in itself a problem in this highly charged political season. Now with this ‘Hang’ Obama gaffe, Romney may find that he has an albatross hung about his own neck. The gathering in New Hampshire of some early GOP hopefuls, including Herman Cain, Tim Pawlenty and Michelle Bachmann was a generally polite but subdued crowd. Clearly not as loud and cheerful as the one in Las Vegas this past Thursday which cheered wildly for Donald Trump and his tough-talking ways. The excitement factor has never been a strong suit for Mitt Romney. While this weekend’s gaffe will probably not matter much in the short term, it may only be the beginning on a long and dull decent into political obscurity.
