Marilyn Davenport, member of the central committee of the Orange County Republican Party and Tea Party member found herself in hot water this week after sending a racist email depicting President Obama as a chimpanzee. Both Republican and Democratic leaders are outraged and calling for her resignation.

Obama

President Obama hasn’t commented on the situation, but Davenport has already heard from the Republican leader of Orange County, Scott Baugh, who’s asked her to step down from the committee. Davenport is fighting the ‘racist’ accusations, saying she only meant it as a joke, and she “has black friends.”

“Oh, come on! Everybody who knows me knows that I am not a racist. It was a joke. I have friends who are black. Besides, I only sent it to a few people–mostly people I didn’t think would be upset by it.”

Drop the shovel Marilyn! Not only is this email clearly racist, but she’s just made it worse by saying she only sent it to people who wouldn’t take offense. Therefore she must have known that some people would find the subject material offensive! If that’s not all, she used the “I have friends who are black” excuse. That just oozes ‘guilty.’

“When I saw that email today I thought it was despicable,” Mr Baugh told OC Weekly. “It is dripping with racism and it does not promote the type of message Orange County Republicans want to deliver to the public.”

But let’s not pretend this exact same thing didn’t happen during the Bush administration. I mean how many photo comparisons have we seen comparing GWB to monkeys? Sadly there’s always going to be some offensive and classless disrespect out there for the President of the United States, and there’s nothing we can do about that. But it crosses a line when it’s propagated by elected officials. Marilyn Davenport, you should have known better.

What do you think of this Tea Party member’s racist email (see the photo here)? Is it becoming PC to disrespect the US president in this way? Should we expect more from our elected officials? Let me know what you think in the comment section!
