In the United States of America it is illegal in some places to fly a U.S. flag. What, you ask? How is this possible, you cry? Well, it’s true… to an extent. Oh, there aren’t many city, county, state or federal statutes where this is codified in law, of course. But where this is happening all the time — and all over the country regardless of region — is in rules created by homeowner’s associations.

What happens is nosy, busybody condo or homeowner’s association chiefs write these idiotic rules where you can’t do this and you can’t do that on your own property. These sort of oppressive restrictions are common in homeowners association rules. One of the most common rules across the country in these fascist organizations is that you cannot fly a U.S. flag on your own property. As it happens, New Hampshire is trying to make this sort of rule illegal with HB 132.

According to the New Hampshire Union Leader this bill was introduced because a woman with a husband in Special Forces wanted to flay her U.S. flag outside her condo door but her homeowner’s association told her she was not “allowed” to do so.

But why does it take a law to allow an American to fly a U.S. flag on their own property? These restrictions are simply un-American through and through.

Now, to some degree a level of blame falls on the home and/or condo owners themselves. After all, as a group they have the power to get rid of these sort of un-American rules against the flying of U.S. flags. Not only that but they agreed to the rules when they bought homes controlled under the association rules and signed on the dotted lines pledging to obey them. Still, most of these buyers ignore “buyer beware” and sign onto these rules without the slightest idea what proscriptions are in them. So, yes, the home owners are to be faulted to a degree here, to be sure.

But, the fact that such a rule should be allowable in this nation in the first place is a conundrum that should be solved.

In America no homeowner’s association should be allowed to stop people from flying American flags. Period. Should they be allowed to stop homeowners from flying Mexican flags? Polish flags? Sure. This ain’t Mexico or Poland. But they should not be able to prevent people from flying U.S. flags. It’s just that simple and common-sensical.

… and I would never, ever sign a homeowner’s association agreement. Unless these busy body fascists are paying my mortgage what I do on my property is MY business. They can bite me.
