Female Afghan boxers are currently training in Kabul for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The athletes are utilizing the city’s main stadium, once used by the Taliban to publicly execute women accused of adultery. Females were banned from participating in any sport under the former regime, and it is still extremely rare in rural areas of the country.

In order to compete in the games, the Afghans will have to pass a pre-qualifying stage in July of next year. According to Afghanistan’s Olympic committee, the nation is expecting to send six women to the games to compete in boxing, judo, and taekwondo. This is a major development for a country that formerly shunned females from athletic competition merely a decade ago. AFP has the full story here.
