Paris Hilton made a surprise telephone call to ABC News’ Barbara Walters from prison. She claims to have found God and desires to turn her tiring act around. She would not be the first person to find religion under dire circumstances although we can all reserve the right to be skeptical.

Interestingly, the lucky jail interview came about because the social debutant called her mother while she was already on the phone with Walters.

Paris confirmed media reports that she has been wailing and screaming in prison which led to her early release last week, and event which precipitated the ire of the judge and landed her back in jail the next day. Read more about the Paris Hilton interview in prison with Barbara Walters.

“I’m not the same person I was,” she said. “I used to act dumb. It was an act. I am 26 years old, and that act is no longer cute. It is not who I am, nor do I want to be that person for the young girls who looked up to me. I know now that I can make a difference, that I have the power to do that. I have been thinking that I want to do different things when I am out of here. I have become much more spiritual. God has given me this new chance.”

God has released me.”

For all the snickering that this passage will generate, let’s hope that it is really her intention. Paris Hilton is exactly what is wrong with our culture today. She is celebrated for acting like a promiscuous moron, gets attention and money for it, and at least some young women follow her shallow lead.
