Sometimes you really have to wonder what they in the White House are thinking? Last year we went through yet another round of ‘Is President Barack Obama A Muslim?’. So why is it that once again, Obama is infusing the term ‘Five Pillars’ in his speeches? He’s done this several times before this week’s State of the Union Address. Has not the White House gotten enough loony-mail to know better than to say anything that even hints at the possibility of Obama being a Muslim? Could it be that the ‘Five Pillars of Islam’ may be the inspiration here? See where I’m going with this?

Five Pillars of Obama

Okay, so this week it was the ‘Five Pillars of Hope’. During the campaign Obama spoke about the ‘Five Pillars of Change’. The first time as president was in April, 2009 with the ‘Five Pillars of Education’. Next it was the ‘Five Pillars of the Economy’. Then the ‘Five Pillars of Foreign Policy’. Last year in June, Obama spoke about the ‘Five Pillars of New Sustainability’. Good grief! Come on people! Come up with something original maybe?

For those interested, the ‘Five Pillars of Islam’ are Shahada (accepting Muhammad as God’s messenger), Salat (praying 5 times per day), Sawm (the 3 ritual fasting periods), Zakat (being charitable and responsible), and the Hajj (a pilgrimage to Mecca during the month known as Dhu al-Hijjah). It should be noted that while not wholly accepted by all Muslims, the more fundamentalists believe in a Sixth Pillar, that of Jihad, ‘The Struggle’. A few sects believe in ‘Seven Pillars’ which adds as the first pillar, Walayah, the Pillar of Submission to God and his prophets.

In the Muslim world, the ‘Five Pillars’ are like the Ten Commandments. The basics of the religion that everyone is taught from childhood. I’m willing to bet that a higher percentage of modern-era Muslims can recite the Five Pillars than could modern Christians recite the Ten Commandments. If for no other reason, that there’s ten that have to be remembered instead of just five.

A very wise person once gave me his two-penny distillation of comparative religion. Judaism is God 1.0, Christianity is God 2.0 and Islam is God 3.0. It all boils down to what is a sin and how bad a sin is it? Pretty much every ‘bad act’ in Judaism is considered a ‘mortal sin’, whereas Christianity is a hybrid with some acts being mortal and some venial sin. With Islam, all sin is venial, and not much of it, because everything is ultimately the Will of Allah. So, God 3.0 is therefore a more ‘user-friendly’ program to follow.

So, given that we have a phrase, Five Pillars, which is widely known in Islam as an integral part of their faith and belief system, why is Barack Hussein Obama continuously using this phrase, this concept, in his speeches? If for no other reason, it would be a wise move to just stop using it for the simple reason that it’s been used so often already. If there was any president who sounds more like a broken record than Barack Obama, please tell me because I can’t think of one who drones on endlessly as much as he does. This is why I wrote yesterday that he laid an egg during the State of the Union address. Take my advice, Barack, hire some new writers! Get some new material! 2012 is just around the corner and your stale spiel from 2008 will not work this time!
