ha … i didn’t say, “simon says” …
June 12th, 2007 at 3:34 am
lisab – only a school teacher would think of that!
June 12th, 2007 at 8:21 am
i love simon says … but it is now considered one of the members of the “Physical Education Hall of Shame”, because those who are “out” are those most in need of learning listening skills … yet they sit down relatively uickly. Those who can follow directions well just get a lot of practice … thus getting even better.
in other words … the poor students get no practice and the best students get lots of practice.
the same thing happens in dodgeball, tag, jump rope ect. and also unfortunately far too often with math and reading. that is, teachers tend to call on the good students …
nowadays we are much more sensitive to this

Ya know Lisa, that’s exactly what’s wrong with education today. Dumb everything down to the lowest common denominator so no child gets left behind which is just another form of moral relativism. What we need to do instead is make the brilliant kids more brilliant so they can cure diseases and invent lighter racing bikes. Simon Says must stay in the teaching curriculum. Bring back dodgeball too.
June 12th, 2007 at 11:40 am
dodgeball is a game where already skilled students pick on low skilled, less physically mature, and often physically weaker students who because of a lack of practice do not possess proficient throwing skills.
moreover it does not develop their throwing skills. children who are hit with the ball are “out” and simply sit on the sidelines until they are put back into play atwhich point they will be targeted again.
being repeatedly struck by a ball is not the kind of positive educational experience we need in schools. humiliation, pain, and being picked on by more physically skilled children are not characteristics of the kind of learning environment most parents would prefer for their children.
