The new RNC chairman, Reince Priebus fires the 2012 GOP staff planning the convention. Being the new broom of the Republican National Committee, Priebus began Sunday dismissing Belinda Cook. She had been former RNC chairman Michael Steele’s personal assistant and was in charge of planning the 2012 convention in Tampa, Florida. Priebus also fired many other convention staffers whom Steele had hired, some of who are members of Cook’s family, including her 26-year old son, Lee. As ‘they’ say, it’s not what you know, but who you know. Or at least, that was how things were done under Michael Steele, who faced earlier financial scandal as RNC head.

When de-throned Michael Steele works, all his friends did, too, and were paid well for it!

Sunday night, Priebus issued a statement “There are some changes that need to be made to ensure a successful convention. Those changes start today.” Steele hired Cook this past July at a salary of $15,000 a month, plus a $25,000 bonus to take the job. Heck, I’d do it for $10,000 a month and they can keep the bonus! Steele also had the RNC pay $4,500 a month for a home in Tampa for Cook to use. Her son had received at least $25,000 as a ‘hotel management consultant’. The RNC has shelled out over $600,000 already for the convention planning, a sum 18 times higher than spent last time.

Michael Steele and financial scandals are becoming like strawberries and cream. You cannot think of one without the other. The RNC is broke, deep in debt from Steele’s lax management style and, possibly from the early indicators, cronyism, too. For example, the planning costs for the 2008 GOP under a similar time-frame was some $35,500. Presently, under Steele and Cook, the RNC had spent by September 2010 around $636,000.

So this forced the new RNC chairman, Reince Priebus to take drastic action as he fires the 2012 GOP staff for spending 18 times more than they should have. Many of those fire were family members of Belinda Cook, whom Michael Steele hired, including her son. It was a good gig while it lasted for Belinda, earning $15,000 a month along with a $25,000 bonus and the RNC renting a home for her in Tampa at $4,500 a month. This is exactly why Steele needed to be replaced.
