With record low temperatures hitting the U.S. and most of Europe and heavy snow putting a freeze on transport, is this finally the winter needed to prove Global Warming alarmists wrong once and for all? Apparently not. Find out what scientists are saying, and see pictures and video on the story below!
With timing that even the most stoic would find amusing, winter temperatures plummeted to historical lows across Europe and the United States just as the World Meteorological Organization published it’s report stating that 2010 would likely be one of the warmest years on record. But some proponents of the greenhouse theory are saying that weather extremes, in either direction, are evidence that the planet is heating up.
“Whoever thinks that the shrinking of some far away sea-ice won’t bother him could be wrong. There are complex interconnections in the climate system, and in the Barents-Kara Sea we might have discovered a powerful feedback mechanism,” said Dr. Vladimir Petoukhov .
Basically, Dr. Petoukhov and his colleagues at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany believe that shrinking polar ice is causing changes in air-flows over Europe. Therefore the harsh winters could just be a temporary byproduct of Global Warming.
“The model simulations show that, when you don’t get ice on the Barents and Kara seas, that promotes the formation of a high-pressure system there, and, because the airflow is clockwise around the high, it brings cold, polar air right into Europe, which leads to cold conditions here while it is unusually warm elsewhere, especially in the Arctic,” he explained.
Still, the empirical evidence experienced by most Europeans and Americans is tough to ignore. Freezing conditions and record-breaking snowfall have even lead some to suggest an impending miniature ice-age.
While the planet’s temperature situation is getting more and more confusing, at least we have one theory that keeps proving itself true: The Gore Effect. Named after famous environmental proponent Al Gore, the Gore Effect basically states that for every report or speech given to support Global Warming, temperatures globally or locally will plummet. What do you think of the theory that the harsh winters are merely a byproduct of rising planetary temperatures? Let me know your thoughts in the comment section!
