The new novel, ‘DEAD OR ALIVE’ by authors Tom Clancy and Grant Blackwood can be described in one term — a page-turner! If you enjoy stories where all the Good Guys are God-fearing Conservatives, Capitalists, Catholics, Protestants or Jews, and all of the Bad Guys are either Muslim terrorists or Progressive-Liberals, then this is THE book for you! For those among you who are long-time fans of Tom Clancy’s work, such as myself, then ‘DEAD OR ALIVE’ is almost like a family reunion, as all of our favorite characters of the ‘Jack Ryan Universe’ are back to save America, and the world, yet again.

The story is set three years after Jack Ryan, Sr., completes five years of his presidency. A Progressive-Liberal senator, Kealty, is president and has completely made a mess of things. The economy is in the toilet, there is a lack of confidence, a lack of direction, and our enemies our on the loose and threatening us. Chief among them is the ‘Emir’, Clancy’s arch-type for Usama Bin Laden.

The Emir leads an Islamic extremist terror group which is planning a major attack on the United States and other key targets to disrupt the world’s economy and structure. But he is being tracked by not only the usual batch of government agencies, but also by an ultra-secret, self-funded group known as ‘The Campus’. Not only does Jack Ryan, Jr. work there, without his father’s knowledge, but a couple of new recruits, Clancy favorite’s John Clark and Domingo Chavez, fresh from retirement from the CIA and Team Rainbow. They take Jack, Jr. under their wings and teach him the ropes of the spy business.

As I said, for us Clancy fans, this book is like a family reunion. We get caught up with many of our favorite characters from previous novels of the ‘Jack Ryan’ series. Like the power-spy couple of Ed and Mary Pat Foley, who are generally unhappy with how the Kealty administration is undercutting America’s intelligence and military capabilities. So much so that Jack, Sr. is prompted to run for president again after learning how Kealty’s ‘Justice’ Department is attempting to prosecute a heroic American soldier for murder because he did his job and killed enemies of Freedom.

Like all of his novels, there are plenty of real-world headlines to add to the yarn’s credibility, and ‘DEAD OR ALIVE’ by Tom Clancy and Grant Blackwood is loaded with them. You half expect to turn on Fox News or even CNN and see the story come to life. I won’t give away too much of the plot, or the ending, but let us just say there will be more. This book begs for another as Tom Clancy is one of those very few writers who makes us readers ask the question, “What happens next?” over and over again!
