Failing to successfully detonate a car-bomb, and then accidentally blowing himself up early before endangering too many lives, Taimour Abdulwahab al-Abdaly had recently returned to his home in Stockholm from a trip to Yemen. Luckily, only two were injured by the terrorists’ attempts, but many more would likely have been hurt had one of the bomb plots gone to plan.

The attempted bombing occurred in Sweden’s capital, and may have been the first of the leaked Al Qaeda Christmas attacks planned for the holiday season. Described as a “critical threat” by Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, the purported terror campaign could be a credible threat given the apparent magnitude of the strike in Stockholm.

“He had three sets of bombs. I don’t think his intention was to blow himself up only. It was a failure, luckily. He was wellequipped with bomb material, so I guess it isn’t too daring a guess to say he was on his way to a place where there were as many people as possible.”

The two insurgents had confessed that the Swedish plot was a part of the alleged bombing campaign, but only did so after the attack had occurred. No other details were immediately available about future operations, but authorities will be on high-alert through the holiday season due to the potential severity of the Stockholm bombing attempt.

Still, this isn’t the first claimed holiday campaign that proved to be mere rumor. There’s a strong chance that these insurgents are merely claiming to have prior knowledge of these attacks in order to gain rewards for cooperating with authorities. Is there a chance that these reported Al Qaeda Christmas Attacks, planned against the U.S. and Europe, are a credible threat?
