Is this a case of Christmas people versus Non-Christmas people? Or is it more about a Festivus for the rest of us? The next thing you know, we’ll be making donations to the Human Fund! In case you have not seen that famous episode of “Seinfeld” the 50-60 times like I have, then consider this. For some time, especially the last eight years, those in the secular humanist and Progressive movements have been busy attacking the Christmas holiday. From Santa Claus to Nativity scenes to store personnel greeting shoppers with “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas”, we’ve all seen examples of the effort to turn this time of year into a non-Christmas holiday season. But, despite their efforts, new polling data shows the trend is reversing, in a big way!

Anna Hodges Smith of Hodges Associates, an advertising, marketing and public relations agency, says that the trend for retail stores making the holidays more generic is ending. Instead of greeting customers with a “Happy Holidays”, nearly 80% of retail stores are now saying ‘Merry Christmas” once again. A poll conducted by the American Family Association, Advertising Age, shows that their campaign to boycott companies that are pushing non-Christmas attitudes are indeed having an affect.

Meanwhile, back in New York City, the 14th Street McBurney YMCA center has decided to give Santa Claus the boot as part of it’s non-Christmas goals! Old St. Nick has been traded for Frosty the Snowman. John Rappaport of the Young Men’s Christian Association says that the decision was based on a goal of attracting a “broader number of kids”. He says about the move “It wasn’t replacing, it was transitioning”. Is that like transforming the nation? According to Michelle Obama, her husband will not allow us to go back to the old days. Barack Obama thinks we must all change our way of thinking, apparently, also about Christmas. At least the White House ‘Holiday Tree’ does not have any ornaments of Chairman Mao this year like it did last ‘holiday season’.
