Bow-wow-wow! Bill Clinton, the ‘Big Dog’ himself, arrived at the White House today to save President Barack Obama from disaster. At stake is a compromise deal with Republicans to extend the Bush Tax Cuts two additional years and unemployment benefits another thirteen months. Many Democrats, and even a few Republicans, are unhappy with the deal. The deal itself has already morphed into a pork-laden ‘stimulus’ bill with oodles of ‘sweeteners’ added on to make the compromise more palatable. Obama has struggled this week to ‘sell’ his cave-in-compromise’ to his own party and others. Hence, former President Bill Clinton to the rescue!

Their ‘joint’ press conference was hysterical. Obama could barely keep Bill away from the microphone in the White House Briefing Room. Once Obama relinquished the podium, Bill Clinton grabbed it and hung on to it for as long as he could. Press Secretary Robert Gibbs attempted to end the presser several times to no avail. Clinton was soaking up all the love he could!

The November elections diminished Obama’s position greatly. With the Democrats loss of the House, and a reduced margin in the Senate, the Obama agenda is D.O.A.. Sure, he can try to skirt Congress by enacting regulations through agencies and departments. But funding such may prove difficult come next month.

So the buzz of the past few weeks in Washington has been about Obama and his staff reading memoirs from the Clinton Era. How Bill Clinton managed to deal with the Republicans taking back the House of Representatives for the first time in 40 years during the 1994 mid-term elections. The battle was not an easy one. The GOP managed to all but shutdown government for the better part of two years. Clinton eventually ‘triangulated’ himself, moving more centrist and adopting a few ‘conservative’ goals.

So Barack Obama finds himself in the same neighborhood now. If today is a sign that Obama will morph into Bill Clinton II, then he is abandoning the Far Left, which will not make them happy. But, as Bill Clinton wisely pointed out today, if they think they’ll get a better deal come January, then they are dreaming. Republicans unhappy with the 13 month extension of unemployment benefits may also be dreaming if they think they’ll get a better deal next year, too. Although, I will disagree with former President Bill Clinton, the Big Dog’, on two points. Extending the Bush Tax Cuts for two measly years will not, by themselves, improve the economy. Secondly, the potential of a government shutdown would not be the end of the world. It might even be a good thing!
