As if the politicians have ran out of things to do, a California congressman fired off a letter Friday to persuade NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to “act swiftly and forcefully” if the Atlanta Falcons quarterback, Michael Vick, was involved in dog fighting.

In the letter, Congressman Tom Lantos pointed out that he’s a senior member of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and suggested that there would be government intervention should the NFL fail to discipline Vick to their satisfaction.

No matter how you feel about dog fighting, or Michael Vick, or the NFL’s record on handing down punishment to players that have stepped out of line, I’m sure that anyone with good any common sense would agree that there are plenty of “real? issues for congress to concern themselves with before pursuing such trivial matters.
