A very legitimate complaint from conservatives about recent immigration is the lack of rapid integration with our disintegrating American culture. That is clearly a problem exacerbated by white liberals who celebrate diversity above cultural homogeny. But we should blame bilingual ballots on liberals, not the illegal aliens. Illegal aliens never voted to legalize cultural separatism. They cannot vote.

And yet there is still room in a melting pot for a little diversity. In San Francisco the Chinese cultural neighborhoods are an attraction. They make the city better and an example of how some cultural diversity actually enhances the overall American culture. In New York the Italian neighborhoods are mostly a thing of the past. We were a better nation when they were thriving in the 1950s.

Incidentally both the Chinese and Italians came into the country for job opportunities, just like the Mexicans are today. They had their advocates and cultural opponents, just like we see today. I trust that “looking like us” isn’t a component of the objections this time — we have surely come a long way since these earlier prejudices.

It does not matter to me a whole lot what we call our resident illegal aliens. Call them illegal aliens or call them citizens, but recognize they are staying no matter what you call them. They are staying and they will get at least some government benefits, so the question becomes whether the costs of amnesty outweigh the benefits.

My gut tells me it is a financial wash, so I say take a deep gulp and get something in return. But do not screw it up like Ronald Reagan and congressional Republicans did before! We were promised a lot for amnesty in the 1980s and the trade was not delivered. That was the end-all, cure-all to the illegal problem. HA!

With respect to the amnesty bill, this can be a historic opportunity for conservatives to get A LOT in return. But conservatives appear to be so simplistically blinded by a single loaded word (“amnesty?) that they cannot see past their noses to spite their faces. And they are going to let the opportunity pass and get screwed by their own short-sightedness.
