Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’ wife, apparently called Anita Hill. On October 9 Virginia Thomas left a voicemail for Anita Hill , asking Hill to apologize and tell the truth. As you may recall, some 19 years ago during the Senate confirmation hearings for Mr. Thomas, Ms. Hill accused Thomas of sexual harassment. Ginny Thomas left the message on Hill’s answering machine at her office at Brandeis University. An offer of an olive branch of peace in exchange for an apology and an explanation was requested by Ginni Thomas by Anita Hill.
A transcript of the message was provided to ABC News. “Good Morning Anita Hill, it’s Ginni Thomas. I just want to reach across the airwaves and the years and ask you to consider something. I would love you to consider an apology sometimes and some full explanation of why you did what you did with my husband.”
Needless to say, Anita Hill considered the phone call and request inappropriate. Hill tells the Associated Press “I have no intention of apologizing because I testified truthfully about my experience and I stand by that testimony.” Hill adds that she wasn’t certain the call was legitimate at first and eventually turned it over to campus police and requested the FBI to investigate. The FBI declined comment.
As you may recall from the controversial Senate hearing, Hill testified that Thomas often made sexually oriented comments when they both worked at the Department of Education and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Hill claims that Thomas often discussed scenes from pornographic films, which Thomas denies and called the allegations a “high tech lynching”.

An olive branch? If she asked for an apology, she was clearly inferring that Anita Hill had lied. That hardly sounds like an olive branch to me. An olive branch would have stopped at “reaching across the years” and merely suggested a conversation. Not telling her what that conversation should consist of.
I have no idea if Hill or Thomas lied. Frankly, they both sounded like they were telling the truth, from what I vaguely remember of the hearings. But this characterization of Thomas’s wife’s call as an “olive branch” is incorrect, Andy, as the transcript clearly shows.

If ever an issue should be left alone it is this one. What’s with Virginia Thomas? The visual of a pubic hair on a Coke can is really something best forgotten.
