Because of former Vice President Dick Cheney, Harry Whittington lives with 30 pieces of bird-shot inside his body speaks with a “warble” because one of those lead pellets is still lodged in his larynx. But the 82-year-old lawyer held no ill feelings against the former VP as he spoke publically about the incident for the first time since leaving the hospital. In February 2006, the two were quail hunting in a Texas range when the VP wheeled around and gave an escaping bird his best shot. Unfortunately a 78 year old lawyer happened to be in the way.

The victim was airlifted to the hospital, and spent the next week in intensive care after suffering a mild heart “event,” collapsed lung, and invasive surgery due to a near-blow to his carotid. Not speaking publically about the accident until 4 days later, Dick Cheney, Harry Whittington’s shooter, never publicly apologized after quail hunt accident.

”The image of him falling is something I will never be able to get out of my mind,” the VP told Brit Hume at the time, adding, ”It was one of the worst days of my life. It was not Harry’s fault. You can’t blame anybody else. I’m the guy who pulled the trigger and shot my friend.”

And that’s as close as he got. Still, exhausted after a week in intensive care and still recovering, the 78 year old lawyer found the time to apologize to the VP for the inconvenience shooting him had caused.

“My family and I are deeply sorry for all that Vice President Cheney and his family have had to go through this past week.”

In the recent interview with Washington Post, the interviewer asked the lawyer if the statement was an acceptance of guilt.

“It really wasn’t that,” he says. “I didn’t intend it that way. It was more of a sense of disappointment that it happened at all. I’m sure it must have been difficult for Mr. Cheney and his family. I still feel the same way.”

Having heart surgery summer, some hoped the former VP with a bad public image might finally be softening around the edges. But his shooting victim indicated he hasn’t received an apology since the 2006 incident. Still, despite being accidentally shot by Dick Cheney, Harry Whittington seems to insist that no apology is necessary. My instinct is: if the victim’s ok with it, I am too.
