This bit of news isn’t exactly mind numbingly shocking, but it is pretty interesting. It seems that an upcoming Obama town hall will be filled by those who answered a casting call. Obama town halls are usually where the President is given a “plant” to ask a question about the issue of the hour so that the rest of us can see just how much he really cares. Thursday’s MTV town hall will be full of “plants.”

Jim Geraghty at National Review first reported this anomaly a few days ago, now the main stream media has jumped on board. ABC’s Political Punch is breaking the news that, yes indeed, MTV, BET and CMT are looking for audience members to take part in a “conversation” with President Obama coming up on the 14th.

A couple observations about the Obama town hall casting call. Doesn’t it seem strange that the most popular President in history would need to rely on actors to fill the audience of one of his town halls? Shouldn’t Obama lovers be beating down the door to get near the guy? But maybe it’s not the “quantity” they’re worried about; maybe it’s “quality.”

According to the report, the casting call asks what issues you’re passionate about and they want a brief description of your political views. Could this be to stack the deck with an Obama friendly crowd on Saturday? The White House hasn’t responded to ABC’s inquiry about the town hall casting call. I’m sure that Mr. Obama will likely say that Saturday’s town hall audience will represent a diverse cross section of Americans with differing views and opinions about everything. They just happen to all be actors.

Yes, very diverse.
