According to Ohio GOP politician Rich Iott, Nazi reenactments were just a hobby he took up to bond with his son. But a photo taken of him donning a WWII German SS uniform may cost the politician Republican support in the upcoming 9th District Congressional elections. The photo above obviously isn’t the candidate, but this is how he’s being seen by voters on both sides of the aisle following the discovery of the picture. Quitting the Wiking Reenactment Society years ago, the GOP hopeful has since focused his attention on politics. Still, the questionable picture will no doubt spell trouble, and has already earned the candidate a public rebuttal from second ranking Republican Eric Cantor, a member of the Republican Jewish Coalition.

“Never, in any of my re-enacting of military history, have I meant any disrespect to anyone who served in our military or anyone who has been affected by the tragedy of war, especially the Jewish community,” said the Ohio Republican in a statement.

Still, he couldn’t hide his seeming admiration for the German war effort in an interview following the discovery of the Rich Iott Nazi photo.

“They took over most of Europe and Russia, and it really took the combined effort of the free world to defeat them. From a purely historical military point of view that’s incredible,” he said.

Reenactments are a popular past time in the enjoyed globally, and it needs to be said that you can’t have an accurate reenactment with everybody dressed up as the good guys. Nonetheless, Democratic rival Marcy Kaptur is wasting no time in taking the offensive on the issue.

“My first reaction was shock, then my second reaction was dismay and then my third reaction was disgust, from what I’ve seen,” Kaptur said in an interview with MyFoxToledo. “To perpetuate such a twisted and dangerous view of history is outrageous and indefensible.”

Do you think the Rich Iott Nazi photo is cause for alarm in the GOP? I think participation in these events is harmless to an extent, but the candidate’s comments admiring the Germans following the photo’s discovery are what seem to be the most damning.
