On his radio show Friday, Glenn Beck announced that he will be away Monday and Tuesday to undergo some additional medical examinations. Glenn Beck and his health have become a hot topic since his announcement in July that he may be going blind. At that time, he was diagnosed as having macular dystrophy, an eye condition that is genetic by nature and can cause some afflicted to go blind. On Friday, Glenn said that he has been experiencing numbness and tingling in his hands and feet. He will be undergoing MRI, PET and CAT scans during his leave of absence.

Conservative radio and Fox News Channel television host Glenn Beck spoke to a crowd of thousands at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Illinois on September 20, 2010. Among them were the Chicago Tea Party Patriots, an organization who states its goal is educate the public and promote the principles of fiscal responsibility, constitutionally limited government and free markets. Other speakers included former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart, Congressman Aaron Schock, and Tea Party leader Herman Cain. The 46 year old talk show host and commentator has become a national phenomenon with his success. His TV show on the Fox News Channel at 5pm has a larger audience than both CNN and MSNBC do combined during primetime hours. His prolific books roar to Number One as soon as they hit the stores. Glenn’s ‘Restoring Honor Rally’ on 8/28 of this year brought crowds of well over 500,000 people together to praise the virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity.

So one has to acknowledge the tragic irony that after years of struggle, Beck has reached such heights in national popularity, only now to face serious health issues. He often admits and reminds his listeners and viewers of his personal failings, particularly his alcoholism. Just as in the case of Rush Limbaugh going deaf at the height of his career, so too Beck faces more medical problems.

Glenn assured his listeners that this is “not bad news, it is just a transition period”. He said at his new website, ‘The Blaze’, that he has been having ‘small fiber’ issues. Of course, some say that this is merely a ploy to cover a rumored departure from Fox News.

Glenn Beck’s show on Fox News is probably the most unusual program on cable news. He has drawn fire from a wide range of Liberal and Left-Wing groups, as well as from both major political parties. It’s not often when both the Democrat-controlled White House and GOP Establishment shun and even attack somebody. Hardly any politician ventures unto his TV show anymore.

Rumors abound that Glenn may be going off the deep end, which concerns Fox News management. That the direction of Beck’s show, exposing the history of the Progressive movement and it’s influence on both major political parties is costing Fox credibility and commercial sponsors. There is also much talk about jealous rivalry within Fox, particularly between Beck and Sean Hannity along with Mike Huckabee. Glenn’s ratings at 5pm would certainly earn him a primetime slot on any other network.

Personally, I enjoy Glenn’s show on Fox News and hope he remains on the air. I also hope that Glenn Beck can overcome any health problems he faces. Glenn Beck will be in the hospital Monday and Tuesday this week undergoing tests. He is clearly a voice in the wilderness during these dark times. Between his macular dystrophy and ‘small fiber’ issues with his hands and feet, Glenn Beck’s health and well being are important to the nation discourse. It’s a good thing Glenn Beck can afford his own health care because I doubt Obama would cover him.
