The U.S. State Department has issued a travel alert for Americans going to Europe, after spokesman P J Crowley declined comments yesterday. The US travel alert warns of a potential terror plot similar to the Mumbai attack in 2008 involving terrorism against places frequented by Westerners, such as hotels and famous landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, according to a Pakistan intelligence agency official. The UK and Japan have now also issued travel alerts to Europe. Britain, France and Germany, as well as other European countries, have increased their terrorism threat levels. Much of the focus of al Qaeda retaliation for the recent surge of U.S. drone attacks in Pakistan. The U.S. State Department travel alert advises Americans to ‘be vigilant’ when in Europe. This comes just days after Osama Bin Laden taped an audio message berates the world for not helping flood victims in Pakistan.

Increased phone traffic between two brothers may have tipped officials off to the possible attacks. One of the brothers, Abdul Jabber, was recently killed in Pakistan by a U.S. drone attack. It is suspected that a ten-man terror team, which includes eight people in Germany, have been trained in Pakistan at camps run by al Qaeda and the Taliban.

Intelligence officials say that the terror plot would have been similar to that of the Mumbai attack in India of 2008. Terrorists intend to attack places where there are many Westerners, especially Americans, to kill and possibly take hostages. This past Tuesday, the Eiffel Tower was evacuated for the second time in two weeks. Police in London have increased their presence at locations like Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square.

In Germany, officials are remaining mute about reports that eight German Muslims may be part of the terror team. However, it was leaked that German officials believe that some 220 people have traveled from Germany to Pakistan and Afghanistan for training. That they have ‘concrete evidence’ that as many as 70 German Muslims have had training at militant camps.

On Saturday, State Department spokesman P J Crowley declined to comment when rumors of the US travel alert emerged. The travel warning advises Americans to “be vigilant” when in Europe, especially at major attractions like the Eiffel Tower. Now, the UK and Japan have also joined in issuing travel alerts due to an increased possibility of terrorism in Europe. A Pakistan intelligence agency official says that a Mumbai-style terror plot may be planned. Along with Britain, France and Germany, other nations, including Sweden, have increased terrorism alerts.
