While her husband, foreign leaders and diplomats attend the annual opening of the United Nations General Assembly on Manhattan, Michelle Obama will take the spouses on a tour of Stone Barns Center, then on to the Blue Hill restaurant for lunch. There, they will eat the items and ingredients featured during the tour. The First lady is an advocate of organic farming and gardening, as well as eating healthy. Part of her “Let’s Move” campaign against childhood obesity.

Last year, Michelle Obama hosted spouses of the G-20 conference leaders to a similar experience at the Rosemont Farm, which is owned by Teresa Heinz, the wife of U.S. Senator John Kerry (D-MA). The First Lady has made a big deal out of the organic garden she started at the White House, allegedly growing 1,600 pounds of berries, vegetables and herbs. These have been used at various White House meals or donated to area soup kitchens.

Michelle Obama’s organic garden also became the subject of controversy during an episode of the TV show, “Iron Chef America”. Two teams of chefs were suppose to create a series of dishes using ingredients from the White House garden. The First Lady appeared at the beginning of the show and the chefs were filmed picking ingredients from the garden. However, the actually cooking took place at the Food Network studio in New York City days later. The items used in the cooking were purchased fresh locally, not from the Obama organic garden.

So as Michelle Obama hosts spouses of foreign diplomats and world leaders, one has to wonder if the subject of the revelations in the new book about Carla Bruni-Sarkozy. The wife of French president Nicolas allegedly told the authors of an encounter with Michelle Obama during a state visit where Carla asked Michelle how was being First Lady? Michelle Obama allegedly replied “Don’t ask. It’s hell. I can’t stand it.” Michelle Obama came under other criticism for her elitist vacation to Spain, acquiring the nickname of “Michelle Antoinette”, referring to Marie Antoinette and her callous “let them eat cake” remark as French citizens starve from a lack of bread. New economic data shows one in seven Americans at or below the poverty level and one in three children need food stamps to survive while Michelle Obama and her husband eat $500 a pound Kobi steaks.
