For many years, Jon Stewart has been berating the news media for emphasizing the conflicts among us and rarely trying to bring us together. I remember many years ago, him appearing on Crossfire on CNN and criticizing Tucker Carlson and his co-host Paul Begala for fanning the flames of anger among the citizenry. More recently, he has been detailing those liberals and conservatives who seem to enjoy riling the rest of us up.
Well now, after faux promoting some type of major event for a few weeks, he announced on the Daily Show this evening that he believes that most people are tired of the crazies on both sides of the ideological divide dominating the national news conversation. He claims that most of us either have lives or are unwilling to conduct themselves in an uncivil manner merely to get attention.
Thus, he is holding a Rally to Restore Sanity. This rally will be held on the National Mall on 10/30/10 from 3-6 pm. Coincidentally, perhaps, Stephen Colbert of the Colbert Report will be holding his own event, entitled the Rally to Keep Fear Alive at the same date, time, and place. This rally is intended to energize those who fear something, anything in modern America. Sounds like something for everyone.
For most of my adult life, there have been claims that there is a Silent Majority in our great nation. It will certainly be interesting that in our notoriously nonpolitical culture if this/these events will draw very many people.
Below is the Crossfire interview that many people believe brought this long-running program to its fitting end.
