I usually approach the appearance of a political figure on fictional television tenuously, as they typically try to at least toe the party line. But the Second Lady was nothing but a class act, and the only ideals she preached were appreciation and support for our military personnel and their families.
For Jill Biden, ‘Army Wives’ was not only her first stint on primetime, but was also her first attempt at acting in her life. Good thing she just had to portray herself!
“I was a little nervous. I had never done any acting, never done any theater in school,” said the Second Lady of her cameo.
In the show, her role was mainly appearing as a special guest at a charity fund raiser for Military Benefit. In the episode, she kicked off an event called the “Fun Run” with a speech.
“I’m proud to be here today as a second lady, but I’m even more proud to be here as a military mom,” she said to the crowd. “Although only 1 percent of Americans are fighting our wars today, we need 100 percent of Americans to support them and their families.”
On ‘Good Morning America’ following the show, the VP’s wife said she was thrilled to be able to use this unique medium to spread her message.
“I felt that I could get out the message to so many people on this show because so many people watch it,” she told Robin Roberts. “I wish every American could just take a moment and reflect on what our soldiers are doing because they’re over there. …… They’re putting their lives at risk. And I just think we need to take a moment and say ‘thank you’ to a military family.”
The Second Lady’s son, Beau, returned from a year-long deployment in Iraq last year, so she speaks from personal experience. What did you think of Jill Biden’s ‘Army Wives’ appearance?
