I have to laugh at this. The junior Democratic Senator from Pennsylvania has publicly stated that he will not support a bill that provides federal funding for stem cell research. It is against his personal beliefs. The left, which celebrated the loss of Rick Santorum with much vigor, must be very depressed to hear this news. The irony is that the senior Republican Senator from PA, Arlen Specter (wink, wink) will support a bill that has federal funding for stem cell research.
Immediately after Bush was reelected, I put Santorum on the indangered species act. Casey’s conservatism plus the brand name of Casey provided Santorum with no real prospect of winning the election. Many Democrats that I spoke to after the mid-terms actually thought that they had somehow changed Casey’s mind on social issues.
My question for the dems now is – what do you think of Casey?

Good point. But in practice Bob Casey’s Senate seat let’s the Dems control all the committees which set the legislative agenda on social issues, approve judges, etc. So despite what Casey says about his strongly held personal feelings, his feelings don’t run deep enough to influence him profoundly. And of course, the wingnuts are still celebrating their Senate majority.

McCain,
I agree with your point of view except that the left desperately needs Casey to push their full agenda. On the social issues they will not have him and that hurts their cause.
