The Arizona, California fight that has been raging recently took yet another turn today. The city of Los Angeles made an attempt at an immigration law power play by publicly declaring they are going to boycott Arizona. That seems to have backfired on them since Arizona came back and said something like, ‘Oh yeah? You seriously wanna boycott?’ Now the mayor of Los Angeles has responded to Arizona’s response to Los Angeles’ response to Arizona’s stance on illegal immigration. Got all that? Well, this tit-for-tat has been going on for a while. Read about it below and we’ll try to get it all cleared up for you.
Arizona recently took a bold step by attempting to enforce the law with regards to illegal immigrants pouring across the border from Mexico. I KNOW!!!! Enforcing the law seems to be quite controversial amongst some, especially those who haven’t read the law and don’t understand that it simply is about enforcing laws already on the books and reflects the federal law on illegal immigration. But lets not let facts get in the way of emotional knee-jerk reactions that seem to be motivated for publicity and to further the cause of pouring propaganda into the minds and ears of the people of our country.
Here is the text of the Arizona Immigration Law SB1070. Controversial? Not really. You can read a lot more about it here, here and here. Because we are here to discuss the repercussions rather than the law itself.
After the big hoopla about Governor Jan Brewer and the Arizona immigration law SB1070, a bunch of groups and governments announced they were going to boycott Arizona. One group even threatened to boycott Arizona Tea which is made in New York. Further proof that an actual education, as opposed to political indoctrination, would be of enormous value to this country’s population as a whole.
Now comes the fun part!
One of the governments that decided to boycott Arizona was the City of Los Angeles. Well, it seems that Arizona and California share a lot of resources, so in the course of doing his job, Gary Pierce, a Commissioner on the Arizona Corporation Commission, wrote Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa a letter and asked him if he was serious about the boycott, cause if he is, then what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. Those weren’t his exact words, but that’s the jest of it. You can read the letter here. The letter hit the airwaves yesterday.
See, isn’t this getting fun?
Mayor Villaraigosa is in Washington D.C., meeting with Mexican President Felipe Calderon, but his deputy chief of staff issued the following statement: “The mayor stands strongly behind the city council and he will not respond to threats from the state that has isolated itself from an America that values freedom, liberty and basic civil rights.”
Okay, so he doesn’t have time to respond and sees Arizona as threatening Los Angeles even though it was Los Angeles that initiated the boycott and their statement read that they wanted to hurt Arizona’s economy. But its Arizona’s fault because Arizona basically told them to put their money where their mouths are. I’m sure we have some commenters who will find the logic in that train of thought, but to me it looks like nothing more than playing to the cameras.
