Just in case you have any doubts about how relevant the United Nations is, this should expel any lingering doubts. Not since Libyia chaired the Human Rights committee has the United Nations looked so irrelevant. But come on, Iran on the Status of Women commission? Really?

High off its success in keeping Iran from joining the U.N.’s Human Rights Council, the U.S. appears to have missed its chance to object to Iran’s selection to the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women, which was affirmed during a so-called U.N. vote this week.

No gesture of disapproval came during an acclamation vote affirming the Islamic nation’s appointment to the 45-nation group.

A senior official with the U.S. Mission to the U.N. told FoxNews.com that “there is no opportunity” to object. “That is not how the procedure works,” the official said.

There are so many things wrong with this story I’m not even sure where to start. It’s freaking Iran! This is a county where a week ago a cleric stated that women who wear revealing cloths are responsible for causing earthquakes. This is a country where women are stoned to death for infidelity and women who are raped are punished for the “shame” it brings their family. This is a country where women who are tanned are arrested and imprisoned for breaking the law. It’s just insanity. With that said, Iran is what it is and the fact that they are exploiting the UN is nothing new.

I find it even more disturbing that any other country out there actually voted for Iran and that the U.S. has said virtually nothing about this at all. Lodge a protest, convene the Security Committee, do something for crying out loud. What has the U.S. done in reaction to this news, I’ll let you judge. According to one U.S. official:

“We’re not going to stand up and cheer,” the official said. “By the same token, that is less onerous than the Human Rights Council because women in Iran, relative to other countries in the region, actually have greater rights.”

Well great, bully for you for not cheering, I’m sure that was hard for you to hold back. This whole line that women in Iran have greater rights than in other countries is complete bull. Iran may be slightly better then Saudi Arabia but they lag way behind Iraq, Jordan, Turkey and Pakistan. How about expressing outrage and saying that we are going to protest this by whatever means we can. To sit back and chuckle and say “eh, that’s the way it is” is just lame.

I loved Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, (R-Calif) response to this disgusting development said that the U.S. official position seems to be “pleasant with gangsters.”

“Iran is the best example. This is yet another example of that strategy. It’s part of the theory of hug-a-Nazi-make-a-liberal. If you treat gangsters in a pleasant way and watch out for their sensitivity, they’ll reform their ways,” he told FoxNews.com.

It’s funny because it’s painfully true. Obama’s approach to handling dangerous despots around the world is that if we just treat them nice and give them understanding then they will be nice in return. How’s that working out so far? But hey, at least we didn’t elect that snow-billy from Alaska, we might have been in real trouble then.
