Rassmussen, the Fuhrer of the polling industry, has a hilarious new poll showing a hypothetical match-up in 2012 where Obama gets 42% of the vote and Ron Paul gets 41%. Essentially the poll and other polls like it (including against W) show that Obama is basically in a dead heat with just about anyone else. Reports are that Elvis Presley is only 5 points behind. From the Rass story:

Obama earns 79% support from Democrats, but Paul gets just 66% of GOP votes. Voters not affiliated with either major party give Paul a 47% to 28% edge over the president…

Thirty-nine percent (39%) of all voters have a favorable opinion of Paul, while 30% view him unfavorably. This includes 10% with a very favorable opinion and 12% with a very unfavorable one. But nearly one-out-of-three voters (32%) are not sure what they think of Paul.

Dude . . . just dude. When you are the President and you are losing the Independents to Ron freaking Paul by nearly 2-1 all is not well in Obamaland. Despite this and other polling evidence the left still wants to cling to the prayer that Obamacare is the awesome, but I don’t think that means what they think it means. Obamacare continues to poll very poorly and it’s no coincidence that Obama’s numbers are tied to it.

Clearly 2012 is still 2 years away and anything can happen between now and then, but you have to admit that this isn’t good news (for the Left). The parallels between 2012 and 1980 are actually quite striking. If things continue in this manner for the next 2 years I think we are very likely to see Hillary campaign against Obama in the primaries like Ted Kennedy did against Carter. Indeed a recent poll shows that Americans actually prefer Hillary now more then Obama. So, if you are Obama do you nominate Hillary to fill Steven’s Supreme Court seat to forestall this possibility? I’d say I’d be pretty tempted were I Obama.
