Until today, it was not illegal for high school teachers to have consensual sex with their students, as long as the students were 16 or older. That policy changed today. It is still not a crime; but the new legislation will mandate that the district fire any high school teacher (I assume it also applies to middle school) having relationships with students. Apparently, what led to the new rules was that a teacher had impregnated a student above the age of consent (aged 16) and was unable to be fired.
My first thought, when I read this, was that I always thought it was illegal for teachers or professors to have sex with students. What was I thinking? Secondly, DC has had a ton of troubles finding teachers for decades. Shouldn’t they have been advertising their policy? I’m pretty sure it would have increased the number of applicants, although the applicant pool may have gotten murky.

“I always thought it was illegal for teachers or professors to have sex with students.”
i thought you were a professor?
how can it be illegal for two consenting adults to have sex?
it was however against the code of ethics in many colleges and universities

yeah, not illegal, but it’s a fireable offense with undergrads, or if a grad student is in your dept. It’s usually ok at schools if the grad student is in a different dept. It’s pretty weird when you walk into a restaurant with your wife to find a married colleague with a hot coed.

This is something new? This is something new? This is only something that happens in Washington, DC?
Why of course! Actually, I went to a totally white-bread, middle-class all-American High School, and we had a scandal like this. And that was…many years ago.
I think that the Police wrote a song about it. They’re white.
Teachers and students and sexual undertones. It is as old as school itself.

First of all, I think 16 is too young for the age of consent. I actually thought it was 18. As far as legal versus ethical, all schools have a code of ethics that the teachers/instructors/professors are to abide by. What happens to anyone that violates these depends on the school and their policies and procedures. The problem here is it is impossible to have rules and regulations and codes that cover everything that can possibly go wrong. When do we rely on a person’s own moral compass to decide what is right or wrong?
Okay what is wrong with this – As flying monkey stated, have sex with the students, that is okay. But, if you call them a looser, watch out.

“I think that the Police wrote a song about it.”
Would that be, “The Ballad of Klo Banging the Biology Teacher?”

No pushback from the teacher’s union? I guess they’re happy so long as nobody tries to start enforcing actual job performance accountability. Even if it means they can’t let anyone find out they’re porking the students.
