The basic facts of the encounter are confirmed by Garn himself according to the Salt Lake Tribune. In 1983 when he was 28 years old and she was only 15, the two naughty friends jumped into a hot-tub together stark raving naked. She was an employee of his at the family business. Kevin Garn’s wife presumably did not condone the secret liaison. For the record her name is Tanya Garn (photo below) who is mother to their six children.
In 2002 while running for Congress on a platform of “Taking a Stand,” Cheryl Maher apparently wanted hush money. She reportedly took $150,000 to keep quiet about the close encounter and she may have subsequently taken money from him for travel expenses here and there. Now she is reportedly embroiled in a divorce with her husband and talking all about it like a naked jailbird.
We are trying to locate Cheryl Maher’s photo or her Facebook page but without luck so far. This girl is NOT the same person.
The public disclosure forced the maligned Garn to the House floor to make a very public confession. After the teary-eyed speech he was high-fived and man-hugged by all the politicians present for his honesty. He confirmed the naked hot-tub episode with Cheryl Maher but claimed that nothing icky happened at all. Is Tanya Garn buying it?
That a married political would get naked with an underage girl is hardly newsworthy. That he would pay her hush money to shut up about it is understandable. What makes this story strange is that nothing happened. Supposedly we are to believe that a married man and teenage girl got naked together but no hanky panky ensued.
“I can unequivocally tell you there was no physical contact, there was no touching, there was no intercourse, there was none of those things. It simply did not occur.”

I hope that the contrite, enlightened Mr. Garn has used this experience to inform his opinion on sex offender registry laws and the like. A less prominent man in his position might very well find himself knocking on his neighbor’s doors to inform them he’s a pedophile.

She voluntarily joined him in a hot tub nude. Both agree nothing else happened and she now claims she is traumatized?
She is an embarrassment to real victims of sexual abuse. In my mid twenties, I taught a class to high school seniors. I had smoking hot 17 year olds flirting with me and making advances towards me all the time. If I had done anything with them I would be considered a pedophile and the girls could claim they were sexually abused later.
I have four words for this story:
GIVE ME A BREAK!
This woman is obviously a con artist and a gold digger. She feels she can use this incident to help her with her divorce somehow–nothing more, nothing less.

I’m in total agreement with John…comment # 2.
I doubt anything happened—and more than likely because he didn’t allow it.
Everyone knows that teens are hormones with feet.
His mistake was in paying her. Now she has to live with her conniving, mean-spirited self.

According to Maher she had been in love with Garn for some time and the hot tub incident was not forced upon her. Her behavior smacks of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Narcissists are almost impossible to get rid of. They will stalk you and harass you until they have sucked every last drop of blood from you. According to the reports Maher would show up randomly — even when he was in far off citeis — and demand money. The victim mistakenly hopes that if they just give the narcissist what he/she wants, the narcissist will finally go away, but it just reinforces the pattern.

I knew both of them. Garn, at the time, was successful in business (Layton, Utah) and while always a bit thin on top he had a little lost puppy dog look about him that made people immediately have sympathy for him.
Cheryl was a bit big in the hips, small chested but had big lovely eyes. I can barely recognize her now – she looks so hardened now. She was a small town girl, very naive and when Kevin started flirting with her she felt big time. And to her SLC was the big city.
There were rumors about them but the LDS church did nothing – he was successful after all, and he was a up and comer with political desires. When I asked her she smiled and didn’t deny their relationship. I’d look at Kevin and he knew I knew and couldn’t look me in the eyes. Apparently he got over that phase because he wanted to be a big fish in Utah.
Yeah, he was successful in his business but people who weren’t blind could see he wasn’t the type who was monogamous. Kevin was/is the typical sleazy politician wanting to go as high as he could regardless of who he stepped on, but he got away with it in Utah because of his puppy dog looks. Now he’s bald he’s clearly lost a lot of that charm.
Note, I’m a true blue liberal and could not care less about how people have sex so I probably don’t care for you types. But I hate hypocrisy (no party has a monopoly on that trait) and more than the politics, I was disgusted with the way the Mormon church treated Kevin with kid’s gloves.

She’s probably married to, or dating a lawyer. She will tell everyone she has “her kids to think about, she’s supporting her aging parents, her dog is sick, who cares…she clearly has no claim or entitlement to money for this and when there’s been no physical harm or mental harm (she has to have a brain for that to happen) she is clearly exploiting an event…easy to understand why she blackmailed him…like most men in the world, we’re not perfect…just ask our wives

I’m really surprised that no one has mentioned that a 15 yr old can’t give sexual consent. I’m surprised so many people are trying to blame a 15 yr old. The part of the brain that makes decisions isn’t completely developed yet. He was completely wrong for participating in getting into a hot tub naked with a minor. And while she made a terrible mistake in judgement she was only 15 and he was a married adult.
