Will President Barack Obama really ban sport fishing in the United States? No, but you can bet that a new batch of regulations and restrictions are coming your way. There are two issues here. One concerns Obama wanting America to join other nations on new restrictions concerning blue fin tuna. Stocks of these fish in the Western Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea are way down, about 70% since the 1950s. The other aspect concerns a new national policy strategy for managing the Great Lakes and inland waters from a government committee, the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force.

This bunch of bureaucrats have been busy reviewing current policies concerning all U.S. bodies of water, water ways, and territories along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. No doubt, this task force is getting plenty of pressure from a wide range of environmental and animal rights groups. So it’s fair to say that the task force probably will recommend changes in current laws and regulations.

Given that there are some 60,000,000 Americans who enjoy sport fishing, not to mention all those recreational boaters who can afford gas and loan payments on their craft, will feel the pinch from Uncle Sam, you have to wonder why on earth Obama wants to pick a fight with them? Is it not bad enough that over half the country opposes his health care proposals? That most oppose his Cap-n-Trade climate change laws and taxes? Let’s not forget the 30,000,000 Americans who are either unemployed or under-employed! I thought Obama promised us during the State of the Union address that he was going to focus his energies on job creation policies?

Where ever this lunacy winds up going, it is yet another sign that Obama is way out of touch with reality and with the American people. He’s already wasted his first 14 months of office, befuddled by the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. Once again, he has allowed himself to be side-tracked by side-shows to appease the Far Left loons.

Saving the blue fin tuna is laudable and some new limits on commercial catches are understandable. But any sweeping changes from this interagency task force, influenced by progressive idiots, is certainly more stupidity at a time when we need real leadership and rational thinking. I’m glad Obama is leaving the country for a while and that Congress will be starting their Passover-Easter break soon. If we’re lucky, they’ll just stay out of Washington till after November and leave us be!
