Former Tennessee Republican Sen. Fred Thompson has once again dipped his big toe in the political waters, and I, like many Republicans are hoping that the straight shooter from the Volunteer State decides to take the plunge.
In an interview with Chris Wallace on FOX News Sunday, Thompson said, “I’m going to wait and see what happens,” adding that, “I want to see my colleagues on the campaign trial, what they say, what they emphasize, whether they can carry the ball next November.”
Thompson is the kind of guy that could rekindle the political fires in the bellies of our membership, and help turn this Republican Party of ours around. Unlike the other presidential hopefuls that have already thrown their hats into the ring, Thompson is a bona fide conservative who knows exactly where he stands on the issues, and is probably the finest person to show an interest in taking a run at the White House since Ronald Regan.
If you are unfamiliar with Fred Thompson, his background, and his politics, here are a couple of links to check out:

I have always liked Thompson because he is a straight shooter. However, my honest opinion is that he is to far to the right at this moment in time. In another past or future, maybe, but not in this cycle.
Reagan did not win landslides just because he was a conservative. Most people just liked Reagan. He had union guys voting for him! He had a charisma that was unmatched. Thompson, while a solid and honest man, does not contain the charisma needed for a conservative to win in 08.
I really like him on L&O and he was great many years ago in Wiseguy.

This would sharpen the Republican primary season a lot. Hope it happens.

I gotta agree with MdeFl – I’m not sure a “true conservative” can win the general. Weenies won’t be able to either.
This is an interesting election – no real front runners on either side – Hillary certainly doesn’t have things sewn up on their side either.

Thomson hates politicking, and would have fun getting out there and just saying whatever he truly belives without regard to “spin” or political advisors. The last guy to put on a campaign like that was Barry Goldwater, who was slimed and slaughtered.
There is a reason that nobody runs a campaign like that. Thomson is an attack-ad-victim-in-waiting. I hope he is nominated. It will be fun.
