The idea that there’s something wrong with, unusual, or telling about Palin’s having scribbled a note on her hand for a speech is absurd. There is no comparison between a couple of words written on one’s hand to remind oneself not to forget something (which is undoubtedly why she did it) and the constant use of a teleprompter — even for a speech to a bunch of elementary school kids.

Palin is no orator. Obama is. But those who aren’t foolish enough to fall for a smooth-talkin dude know that speaking skills aren’t everything. Moreover, there’s nothing genuine about using a teleprompter. A monkey can read from a teleprompter.

Palin may not sound polished when she speaks, but she speaks from the heart. I suspect she’d rather trip over her words and come across as authentic than read from a screen and sound eloquent. At least this way Americans know she’s for real, and that’s what she’s banking on.
