There is an article, written by Jerry Seper and published in the Washington Post today that highlights the importance for the American government to redouble their efforts in order to secure our southern border with Mexico.

According to the Seper article, violence along the U.S.-Mexico border is reaching critical mass, and law enforcement officials describe this trend as “an unprecedented surge.” Violent gangs and drug cartels are getting their hands on high powered weapons, ammunition, and more, in order for them to have the necessary equipment to challenge any U.S. law-enforcement personnel they might encounter while carrying out their illegal activities on the U.S. side of the border.

Believe it or not, just last month Mexican military officials in Matamoros, Mexico, just across the border from Brownsville, Texas, searched a tractor-trailer which they discovered weapons, ammunition, and even an armored pickup truck complete with bulletproof glass. The weapons seized consisted of 18 M-16 rifles, one of which was outfitted with a M-203 40mm grenade launcher, several M-4 carbines, 17 handguns, 200 magazines, 8,000 rounds of ammunition, and an assortment of assault vests and other miscellaneous military accessories.

I’ve heard it said that the government won’t be willing to take any real action to resolve this issue until blood starts spilling in the streets of U.S. towns and cities. What those people don’t realize is that in communities from Texas to California that is a reality that has already come into being. As clashes between Mexican criminals and U.S. authorities are happening more and more often, the citizenry is getting caught in the crossfire more and more frequently.

Reading the Seper piece reinforced my opinion that politicians have really learned nothing from the events of 9/11 in the way of true homeland security. From the executive office on down, they are more focused on figuring out ways to exploit the voting power of the Hispanic population in this country over providing the safety and security most of us expect from them. It is outrageous that the leaders of most powerful nation in the world are simply unwilling to take the steps necessary to halt these daily incursions by armed thugs and foreign criminal organizations. This must change.
