Northern California has been rocked by a 6.5 magnitude earthquake. The quake hit close to Eureka, California at about 4:27 p.m. (PT) (7:27 p.m. ET). The quake hit about 25 miles from Eureka and ran about 10 miles deep. There are reports of power outages, but no reports of injuries at this time. It is being reported that some areas are being evacuated.

A similar earthquake hit the same area in 1994. That 6.7 magnitude earthquake killed about 70 people and injured about 9,000.

Aftershocks of today’s quake are being felt in Oregon and San Francisco. Smaller quakes have rattled the San Francisco over the last couple of days leading to concerns of larger aftershocks in the coming hours and days. There are currently no tsunami warning issued.

Residents of the area are describing this as a ‘monstrous’ quake that lasted a long time (about 10 seconds) and was a ‘rolling in all directions quake’ as opposed to a sharp, quick earthquake.

UC Berkeley seismologist Richard Allen said that the area where the earthquake occurred was in the Mendocino Triple Junction, where three tectonic plates collide, one of the most seismically active regions of the San Andreas transform system.
