Paul Joyal, an expert on Russian intelligence, was critically injured Thursday when two men shot him in his driveway in front of his Washington D.C. area home just 4 days after he accused the Russian government of orchestrating the poisoning of former KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko.

In an interview that aired last Sunday on Dateline NBC, Joyal accused the Russian government of trying to silence its critics. “A message has been communicated to anyone who wants to speak out against the Kremlin: If you do, no matter who you are, where you are, we will find you, and we will silence you _ in the most horrible way possible,” Joyal said.

At this point in the investigation, police are saying that the shooting appears to be a random robbery and street shooting, however the FBI is assisting in the investigation, which does suggest that authorities are checking into the possibility of a Kremlin connection to this case.
