A court security officer and a gunman were killed during a shootout at the Lloyd George Federal Building in downtown Las Vegas Monday. Authorities said a third person, a Deputy U.S. Marshal, was also injured. Las Vegas police spokeswoman Barbara Morgan said the shooter had been shot in the head. “It looks like he went in there and just started unloading,” Ms. Morgan said.

Witnesses said a man wearing combat boots and fatigues was found dead in the bushes near the courthouse. Authorities did not confirm the identity of the shooter but said he was wearing black pants, shirt and jacket. He carried the gun under the jacket.

Cell phone video taken outside the building was uploaded to the YouTube Web site by a witness, Nicholas Gramenos. Gramenos was reporting for jury duty when the shooting broke out.

The description of the video says:

Monday Jan 4th Armed man opens fire outside of Federal Courthouse in Downtown Las Vegas after explosions. I just exited the building for a jury summons.

Hell of a morning for a jury duty! Nicholas Gramenos exclaimed. He saw the killer before the shooting and witnessed his end on the streets.

The courthouse contains 10 courtrooms, as well as offices for United States Marshals and the U.S. Attorney, as well as offices for Sens. Harry Reid and John Ensign.

Nevada Senator Harry Reid released the following statement regarding the shooting that took place this morning at the Lloyd D. George Federal Courthouse in Las Vegas:

My thoughts are with the victims of today’s shooting and their families. The law enforcement personnel who protect the courthouse put their lives at risk every day to keep the people who are inside safe and I greatly appreciate their service.

Senator Ensign gave a briefing in front of the building and declared that he always felt safe inside the Federal courthouse. He said that the shooter was just a crazy person. The murderer was not able to pass security in the building and was killed when he escaped back on the street.

The Lloyd D. George Federal District Courthouse is located on the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Bridger Avenue.

The entrance to the courthouse is on Las Vegas Boulevard. There are commercial parking facilities on the surrounding streets. The courthouse is located in the downtown district and easily accessible from Highway 15 and 95 exits.

Authorities believe the shooter acted alone, Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Roxanna Lea Irwin said:

The building was evacuated, police and news helicopters circled overhead, and Las Vegas police cordoned off the area for several blocks. A 16-story state and local courthouse two blocks away was locked down as a precaution.
