Who knew that a Curlew could be such a party pooper? Well maybe not the Curlews themselves but advocates for the Curlew. The rock band AC/DC, animal rights groups say, is a danger to birds that nest near the Wels Airport where the concert is to be held.
The animal rights group BirdLife is threatening legal action if AC/DC goes ahead with its sold out show in May. Some 80,000 tickets sold out in a matter of just hours; but advocates for the Curlew don’t really seem to care too much about that. They fear the loud music would somehow endanger the birds.
Hans Uhl, who represents BirdLife says the second largest colony of Curlew nests near Wels Airport where the concert is to be held, “The second biggest colony of Curlews in upper Austria and various other ground nesting birds must not become endangered,” Uhl said. Let me get this straight, the birds aren’t endangered? They just shouldn’t “become” endangered.
How exactly would AC/DC’s music threaten Curlews? Would an Angus Young solo burst the bird’s eardrums? Would the screech of Brian Johnson’s voice leave them wandering aimlessly looking for a new nesting ground? Please BirdLife, explain the dangers involved.
I’m a fan of freedom and liberty, I’m not a fan of AC/DC; animal rights groups never have a problem taking individual freedoms away from private citizens, no matter who they are or their country of origin. I say play on AC/DC, let the Curlew find somewhere else to nest, at least for the night.
The AC/DC, Animal rights group case seems to be yet another example of liberal environmentalists usurping the rights of individuals in favor of rights for animals that may or may not actually be in danger due to an activity being performed by said individuals.

well it is a lot of human induced noise for the birds to bear. really sound pollution to them. It makes money for a few humans and entertains a few more, but at what price to the birds and their nesting behavior and young? Are birds worth more than the band and its promotoers bankroll? so as you can see, dilemmas abound.

It’s my opinion that once the ramps to the stage are no longer just for the instruments, it’s time to hang it up.
December 26th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
these guys look kind of goofy for what passes as serous music to some. whom are they parodying, and why aren’t they boogey boarding?
December 26th, 2009 at 5:20 pm
I dont see why anyone/bird should have to be felt sorry for or be guilty of anything. Stadiums are zoned for these events and so if these animal rights freaks cares so damn much these Curlews they’d have watchs set up and be out there checking wherever they’re know to nest amd move them away from the perimiters of the stadiums zoning to a more Curlew friendly location.
I think it would be a hell of a lot cheaper the canceling and event for 80,0000 people.
Which all goes to making you ask yourself just WTF are these animal rights nut jobs really trying to do ? The whole thing is like most of these bleeding heart organizations and probably just some front for a bunch of anti capiltalist who would have anarchy amongst civilized humans in exchange for peace with animals as a means to break the economy. Then when were all starving we can eat every Curlew and animal on the edge of extinction.

correction
I think it would be a hell of a lot cheaper than canceling an event for 80,0000 people.

people have overpopulated themselves on the planet. we are way too crowded, probably by a factor of 4 or 8. so the smart people are speacking up for the animals. obviously, a little late. they are not nut jobs, they are aware people. aware.
December 26th, 2009 at 6:27 pm
“they are not nut jobs, they are aware people. aware.”
They’re nut jobs because they cant see that that if they really cared about these birds they wouldnt let them nest or reside where they do. And they would of brought this up sooner. If the birds are nesting they’ve been there for at least 3-4 months already, if they’ve got chicks , longer.
Second of all, I’m sure by now theres been more than one event at this stadium and if it were so uncomfortable for the birds they’d of probably left long ago.
Thirdly, they’re nuts jobs if they think that they’re going to get away with this because it would pave the way for them to be able to do this stupid crap in the future.
If these types of actions are always conceded to or accommodated we’ll start seeing every event that even bothers sewer rats being canceled, including taking a dump, just so these nutjobs can get away with their ulterior motive of ruining the economy thereby destructing capitalism.
Also what REALLY makes these guys nut jobs is the fact that they actually think they’re going to get an event worth almost a 100 million bucks cancelled when a small portion of that could be used to fund the re-location of the birds.
They’re nut jobs because they cant see the logic and compromise that would benefit everyone/animal and only want a totalitarin autocratic dictative because, well, its easier on the mind to just issue a declaration to someone and call it that. Cognitive dissonance, one dimensional thinkers, lazy mind, stupid liberals, its all the same, gotta keep it simple.
Like many things that they want to just stop regardless of what the ramifications could be.
No matter what catastrophies might occur as a result these kinds nutjobs will stop anything and everything for the sake of looking like they care. But, as I said, we all know thats a bullsht front because ultimately I think they’re out to ruin the economy posing as animal rights freaks or environmentalist.
Its most noticable when you see them going after huge venues that bring in so much cash. Of course they probably wont protest to close the highway that goes past the Curlews nest because then they’d have to find a different route to their clubhouse.
December 26th, 2009 at 6:31 pm
“they are not nut jobs, they are aware people. aware.”
I’m sure your familiar with knowing that those people who are “TOO” aware are often the ones that have problems ?
Being aware does neccessarily mean that you have any grip on reality and for all we know could be listening to 10 year old paint drying.
December 26th, 2009 at 6:33 pm
if they live near a airport they already are exposed to noise
December 26th, 2009 at 7:04 pm
Great point.
December 26th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
I am not sure you can hear 10 year old paint still drying as statistically near the entire element set of it would be quite dry. but, i think you could hear 10 year old paint slipping from the walls.
December 26th, 2009 at 7:34 pm
I hope the AR ppl win because I wouldn’t want that hell music playing near me either!!!
This planet belongs to animals as well as humans, so you selfish humans can go get a life in another park where you don’t bother me or the birds!!!!
December 26th, 2009 at 8:05 pm
“I hope the AR ppl win because I wouldn’t want that hell music playing near me either!!!”
John, you make my point.
Whats more important ? Nursing your hatred for music you dont care for or the birds ?
I’m sure the birds arent as discriminating as you are be it their taste in music or any sound for that matter and as I mentioned earlier if it bothered them so much they would of left a long time ago.
People seem to forget just how far weve come as a people in the way we treat animals.
” am not sure you can hear 10 year old paint still drying as statistically near the entire element set of it would be quite dry. but, i think you could hear 10 year old paint slipping from the walls.”
And I’m not sure you ever laughed at a joke in your life. The point was that some people focus on things to the point to the point of overloading their senses which inhibits rational thought.
With all that input comes the need to be able to communicate that experience to someone else. This can becme very complicated so what these kind of people end up doing is issuing very dictative aurocratic explanations.
Like the global warminmg freaks who dont want to engage in the debate. They know it will boilod down to the concensus that there is still plenty of room for debate so thay simply say “silence”! There is no more debate”!
Just like with these birds.
“Theres no two ways about it ! Everything has to stop “!
December 26th, 2009 at 8:36 pm
people who lack prefrontal lobes don’t have what you or I might call rational thought. that is devo! regarding global warming, or say a dirty ugly polluted campsite…Police your campsite recruit! make it spiff and span! You know its the right thing to do. Nature agrees! and yes, there is global warming, but cyclical and secular. one secular trend is the overpopulation of the earth with human mammals exploiting combustable carbon technologies to no end. another is when our savior glowing sun slowly enlarges and crosses our borders enveloping us in its shroud. either way, its happening.
December 26th, 2009 at 11:06 pm
in other words it is 100% because of the sun
and the amount of carborn humans use has almost zero impact

I’m a rock fan myself and enjoy AC/DC’s music, but let’s get a few facts straight: BirdLife is not an animal rights group composed of activists but a wildlife conservation group composed of ornithologists. There’s a big difference. It’s not the music that threatens the rare birds but the 80,000 fans unwittingly trampling the nests, young birds and eggs that are actually laid directly on the ground where the concert is to take place in the middle of the breeding season. BirdLife is not requesting cancellation of the concert but postponement till after the breeding season when the young have hatched and gotten out of harm’s way (or relocation). This all doesn’t come out in the original report that all the online sources are copying, but I live here and I know better.
December 27th, 2009 at 11:44 am
Robb, thanks for the facts, but you have to realize that no one here gives a bird’s butt for facts. Facts? What are facts? This is the Theater of the Insane, and insane people do not even know what the definition of “facts” is, let alone care for them.
December 27th, 2009 at 12:05 pm
I think the birds look cooler than that picture of those guys on top,(I mean is that what passes for cool these days?) so I am sympathetic to the birds. I like the movie too! and the second one too!
December 27th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
These guys are one step away from plaid pants and white belts. In comparison, they probably feel cool.
December 27th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
“regarding global warming, or say a dirty ugly polluted campsite…Police your campsite recruit! make it spiff and span! You know its the right thing to do. Nature agrees! and yes, there is global warming, but cyclical and secular. ”
Nice try at your typical obfuscating.
I’m talking about the kind of global warming that exists only to raise energy prices thru the roof as a means to destroy our economy (Marxist rule #1) and dictate cookie cutter lifestyles to us all. And no one said anything about not wanting a clean environment so spare me the moronic suggestions otherwise. And the other one that were supposed to be able to do something about the suns postion.
I said it, and Lisab said it basically the same way.
They’ve been next to the airport for quite a while, if it bugged them so much they’d of left a while ago.
Theres no problem here except for the idiots that are making it one for ulterior purposes that go to only supporting ther agenda I mentioned which is to collapse the economy all in the name of the earth and the animals. We see it everywhere being done rather blatantly if you just pay attention. The first giveaway as I mentioned is that these “rescues” or whatever they’re called always seem to threaten something highly entrepenueral and profitable.
“Robb, thanks for the facts, but you have to realize that no one here gives a bird’s butt for facts. Facts? What are facts? This is the Theater of the Insane, and insane people do not even know what the definition of “facts” is, let alone care for them.”
Be quite , please. You’ve never in the whole time you’ve blogged here ever used on fact to make any of your idiot claims.
If in fact those are the facts the argument still applies here that this structure was zoned for this partially to be of consideration to spaces otherwise more suitable for animals, its next to an airport for crying out loud.
“young birds and eggs that are actually laid directly on the ground where the concert is to take place ”
Like I said, if these guys were watching these birds with such a loving eye this never should of been allowed to happen. As a matter of fact of all the people who work at this stadium you mean to tell me that these birds had enough time and opportunity to build a nest, lay and maintain eggs before someone said “hey, theres birds trying to nest square in the middle of the stage “!
Nah, sorry, its not making sense now. These birds should of been spotted long ago and/or relocated of chased away within no less of an hour after showing interest in the sight. My father managed a theme park/tourist attraction in Hawaii, I was raised around hundreds of thousands of birds from all over the world and know that most birds dont just randomly pick any sight to nest and do make a rather big spectacle of the whole territorial thing involved in selecting a nest.
I could see it if they were tucked away in the rafters or eaves but right where theres traffic that might stomp them ?.
Its a lot less expensive to take them away to a better location or incubate them.
December 27th, 2009 at 2:25 pm
that is like accusing the jones family who are in the campsite next door of being marxist because they fish together and cook together and then clean up the campsite together. all this when they should be competing in the open market against each other! we need more competition, and concominantly, more sports and media stars! Then we will be the America we all long for!
