In what can only be described as a shocking and horrific tragedy, four police officers, three men and a woman, were killed on a quiet Sunday morning in the Forza Coffee Shop in Parkwood, Washington. Police are calling the cop killings a “targeted, selected ambush” and they are looking for Maurice Clemmons, a person of interest. Read more below, see photos of the slain police officers, and a video.
A gunman burst into a coffee shop in Lakewood, Washington (sometimes called Parkland, Washington) which is about 40 miles south of Seattle, and opened fire on the four officers — three men and a woman — as they worked on laptops at the beginning of their morning shift. The officers killed in cold blood were identified as Sergeant Mark Renninger, Officer Ronald Owen, Officer Tina Griswold, Officer Greg Richards. The Lakewood Police Shooting has rocked the Lakewood Police Department in Pierce County, Washington as well as this close-knit community.
An aggressive manhunt is underway for “a person of interest” - a man identified as Maurice Clemmons, age 37 years old - in the Lakewood Police Shooting, also known as Parkland, Washington shooting. According to police, they suspect that the attacker may haven been injured when one of the officers struggled out the door and fired his gun at the attacker before dying. All hospitals are being checked for patients coming in with gunshot wounds.
The person of interest in this ambush, Maurice Clemmons, is currently under the state supervision of Department of Corrections with an extensive criminal past that includes a long history of violence. Michelle Malkin has a lot more on his history.
Maurice Clemmons had received a 60-year prison sentence in Arkansas in 1990 when he was 18 for burglary and theft of property. At the time of that sentencing, he was already a habitual offender serving 48 years for five felonies. And then guess what happened? Then Governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas commuted his 95-year sentence in 2000, citing Clemmons’ “young age”. I wonder what Huckabee is thinking tonight? Well, to avoid a “Willie Horton” moment, we don’t have to wait long — he’s released a statement on his PAC website.
Over the years, Clemmons has had multiple felony convictions in Arkansas and Washington, but has been repeatedly released, sometimes over objections of prosecutors who put him behind bars. This time around, Clemmons had been released just six days ago from jail, where he had been held for several months on a pending charge of second-degree rape of a child and assault on a police officer.
It is unknown if Clemmons is responsible for the Lakewood shooting. He is only a person of interest at this time according to Lakewood Police and the Pierce County Sheriff.
The officers the Lakewood shooter ambushed were Sergeant Mark Renninger, and Officers Ronald Owens, Tina Griswold, and Greg Richards. They were in full uniform and wearing bulletproof vests. The officers, part of the city’s 100-member police force, had been with the department since it was organized five years ago. Here is a wee bit more about the officers who were killed:
Sergeant Mark Renninger was 39 years old and had 13 years of law enforcement experience. He is survived by his wife and three children.
Officer Ronald Owen was 37 and had 12 years of law enforcement experience. He is survived by his former wife and a daughter.
Officer Tina Griswold was 40 with 14 years of law enforcement experience. She is survived by her husband and two children.
Officer Greg Richards was 42 and had eight years of law enforcement experience. He is survived by his wife and three children.
We at Right Pundits are remembering their families tonight. We have great hope that the person of interest, Maurice Clemmons, can be found soon. You can see amazing photos from the scene and the memorials in Lakewood, Washington by going here and watch a video of the coverage of the Lakewood Police Shooting: Lakewood Police Department Pierce County, Washington below.

This is beyond belief that in America this kind of thing could happen. They were on break not bothering anyone. They were heads of families with spouses and children and represented over 40 years of street experience as a group. How could anyone be able to do what they did? This will change forever how police take their breaks and reduce their mixing in with the public and relaxing. Why did this person do this>?
November 29th, 2009 at 11:14 pm
No Brian, this should change forever how we parole violent criminals after serving only a fraction of their sentences.
Way to go Huckabee you freakin’ rino. Because of your know it all attitude, four families are going without a parent tonight.

This just pisses me off. Huckabee now claims that it’s the fault of others in the Department of Corrections in Arkansas and Washington.
”Should he be found to be responsible for this horrible tragedy, it will be the result of a series of failures in the criminal justice system in both Arkansas and Washington State. This commutation made him parole eligible and he was then paroled by the parole board once they determined he met the conditions at that time. He was arrested later for parole violation and taken back to prison to serve his full term, but prosecutors dropped the charges that would have held him. It appears that he has continued to have a string of criminal and psychotic behavior but was not kept incarcerated by either state. This is a horrible and tragic event and if found and convicted the offender should be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”
Get it folks? He merely commuted the sentence of a five time felon. Anything that happened after that was beyond his control.
Huckabee you’re a scumbag. Fox News ought cancel your contract right this now because you’re radioactive dude!

I don’t think huckabee can recover politically from this really. But remember, so far this character is just “a person of interest” so we will have to wait and see what unfolds in the coming day or two hopefully. I agree though, I am really unclear how any parole board would release someone with his record and am curious as to why. frankly, a governor should have his own independent people look at the parole board recommendations as well and take some time to review them himself.

i completely agree FM. huckabee sucks.
November 30th, 2009 at 12:48 am
Well Brian, we should know shortly. They have him surrounded in a house in Seattle.
You’re correct Brian that he will never recover from this politically. It’s beyond Willie Horton and he didn’t even have the decency to apologize for his original faux pas.

I think someone on politico.com said it best, “Huckabee’s not fit to be a dogcatcher.”

Its always has to be someone else fault. They choose their profession, which came with risks, the same risks that everyone faces death at the hands of someone else. The police in this country are nothing more than collectors and protectors of the elite. They would just as much watch you die as they would collect taxes from you via a traffic violation for those they serve. And those they serve are not you or your neighbors. The same government that continues a war in Afghanistan, sacrificing and replacing solders, daily, under some pretense of protecting your freedoms, will have replacements for these four too. As the DOLLAR is the KING no matter who is in control.

Huckabee is toast. This clears a little problem for the GOP since he isn’t the right person to unite the party. Good guy though.
Looking at these 4 pics really pisses me off. We are way too lenient on criminals like Washington shooter Maurice Clemmons in this country.
November 30th, 2009 at 7:30 am
Yeah, cool.
Huckabee being at the top of the list was beginning to scare me too.

Blacks have targeted whites in Denver for indiscriminate killings recently and now this outrageous crap. This is the beginning of the race war this country has building up to for a long time.
Now, you may think this is utter nonsense but open your eyes and stand by.

when will the courts and parole boards and governors STOP letting these people back on the streets. Time and time again, people are murdered and raped by convicts that should NEVER have been released !
November 30th, 2009 at 9:36 am
there are certainly some cases where people deserve parole but there are also cases where they should NEVER be let out.
Sex offenders have a very high rate of recidivism and should NOT be paroled. Anyone that has committed premeditated murders, especially more than once, should never be paroled.
This individual had NEVER committed murder. He did however, have 5 previous felonies. So a strong case for his NOT being release can be made.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:04 am
Hey!
They let me out !
Case closed
More PC bull.
Person of interest ?
The cop capped a “person of interest” ?
Hes a freeking suspect. At least call him that.
November 30th, 2009 at 10:08 am
wellllll…
all i can say is that it’s pretty hard to rape kids and kill police officers in WA state if you are locked up in AK.

This is tragic beyond belief.
Believe it or not, one person does benefit from this…Sarah Palin. If Huckabee is out (and he will be), Palin will take the bulk of his support.
November 30th, 2009 at 3:28 pm
Ignatius, must we really discuss how someone will benefit politically from this act of barbarism?

Wes, that’s what this site is for.
