America is celebrating another Thanksgiving at a time of war. The nation awaits President Obama’s new strategy for Afghanistan in hope that the Commander-in-Chief will shine a guiding light for our troops.
After months of dithering on Afghanistan President Obama will announce his decision on Tuesday. Why wait? May be he didn’t want to spoil our holidays? Judging from the speeches NATO and British officials gave this week and the leaks from the White House, Obama will announce that we are there to stay in Afghanistan for at least eight to ten years.
Most likely President Obama will say that our troops must stay in Afghanistan to prevent the Taliban filling any ”vacuum” and claiming victory. So what is the goal?

US will seek serious counter insurgency effort in Afghanistan as the best means to achieve counter-terrorism strategies. President Obama will also call NATO Allies to do their part in burden-sharing.
British Foreign Secretary David Miliband was the first to define a goal in Afghanistan last week:

Our goal is not to fight to the death. It is to demonstrate clearly that they cannot win and to provide a way back into their communities for those who are willing to live peacefully.

At least he is talking about winning. Of course, Miliband is not getting Nobel Peace Prize any time soon, so he is free to talk about the War in Afghanistan any time his duties call for it.

It is safe to say President Obama will follow the lead and give extra troops to his generals in Afghanistan (Probably not the maximum that our Commander on the ground Gen. McChrystal asked for, but a substantial number to send a message that terrorists will not win that war). President Obama probably will not use the word “terrorists”.

On this Thanksgiving Day we are thankful for our freedom, for the bread on our table, for the time we share with our loved ones. We remember those who were here before us: all those different people that stumbled upon each other long time ago. The natives helped the newcomers to survive in their adventure under the big Sun and next to the blue ocean. The newcomers built harbor light towers and people from all over the world came and are still coming fulfilling their own adventures in America.
On this Thanksgiving Day we pray our President will give our troops a guiding light that will lead them to victory with pride in Afghanistan.
