Naples, Florida now has the distinction of being the home of “kick a Jew day”. 10 middle school students were suspended for one day for taking part in the strange activity. A Jewish student told the principle that she had been attacked and kicked, upon further investigation the principle found that 10 such incidents had taken place.

The Florida branch of the Anti-Defamation League became involved after the incidents received widespread attention on local news outlets. David Barkey of the Anti-Defamation League said:

“If the allegations are true, it is possible these students violated Florida’s new anti-bullying law. And, if students were physically assaulted, it could rise to the level of criminal conduct.”

The 10 students who were involved in “kick a Jew day” received 1 day in school suspension in harmony with the schools bullying and harassment policy. But that really doesn’t seem like much of a punishment to me. If students were singled out simply based on their ethnicity, and assaulted in some way, it seems the school should do more. Would the students have only received 1 day in school suspension if it had been kick a Muslim day?

So the question for all of you is this, is there rampant anti-Semitism in Florida? Or Naples to be more specific. “Kick a Jew day” would seem to indicate that the possibility exists. Just like racism towards African-Americans, I think that anti-Jewish sentiment or anti-Semitism is a learned trait. It’s not something you’re born with.

We’re talking about kids in the 11 to 13 year old range. “Kick a Jew day” seems a little advanced for kids of this age. Why Jewish kids? Why not kick a nerd day? Why not kick a freak day? 10 students taking part in a “kick a Jew day” is pretty disturbing. This isn’t the first time something like this has happened in a U.S. middle school.
