The state of Virginia is preparing to execute the DC Sniper, also known as John Allen Mohammed by lethal injection on Tuesday, November 10 at 9 pm for the murder of Dean Harold Meyers seven years ago at a gas station in Manassas, Virginia. You can read more below, see photos and a video.
On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court declined without comment to consider the appeal and stop the execution of John Allen Muhammed, age 48, also known as the DC Sniper. His lawyers have also made an appeal to Virginia’s Governor Tim Kaine to commute John Mohammed’s sentence to life in prison, saying the DC Sniper is mentally ill and should not be executed. Many say, however, that it is unlikely that Kaine will step in so it seems barring commutation, that John Muhammed, the DC Sniper’s Execution will go forward as scheduled.
For 3 weeks, in the early fall of 2002, John Allen Mohammed and his teenage partner Lee Boyd Malvo terrorized the DC area by carrying out what was commonly called “the DC Sniper attacks”. They killed 10 people and wounding 6 others (including a child) in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington DC. Muhammad and Malvo were finally arrested on October 24, 2002 because of tips provided by citizens. They are suspected of 5 additional killings and 4 more wounded in other states as well.
After their arrests, John Muhammad went to trial for Dean Harold Meyer’s killing and received the death penalty. Lee Boyd Malvo, because of his age at the time of the shootings, is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole. Muhammad’s attorney, Jonathan Sheldon, says:
“Virginia will execute a severely mentally ill man who also suffered from Gulf War Syndrome the day before Veterans Day.”
Well cry me a river!
During those 3 weeks in 2002, people were scared. They stayed indoors, afraid to go shopping or pump gas. “Keep moving around, don’t be a target!” authorities on television would say to area residents in an effort to keep them from becoming the next victim of the DC Snipers. Even schoolkids were kept inside at recess and drilled on duck-and-cover techniques for gosh sakes! No one was safe from John Allen Muhammed, the ring leader, or Lee Boyd Malvo, his teenage accomplice.
Be assured, the anti-death penalty crowd will be out in full force, wailing and gnashing their teeth, holding a candlelight vigil at Muhammed’s final hour. But frankly, I really don’t care too much about them. I care about the families of the victims the DC Snipers killed and how they must be feeling: anxiety, relief, loss, grief, re-lived pain, fear, anger, justice. No matter which side of the DP argument you land, we all can feel horrible for them to have to go through something like this, reliving the nightmare all over again.
So here are the details of John Allen Muhammed, the DC Sniper’s execution:
The execution will take place on November 10 at 9 pm eastern at the Greensville Correctional Center, south of Richmond, Virginia. John Mohammad will be strapped to a metal gurney. According to reports, he will be wearing flip-flops, denim pants and a special short-sleeved denim shirt to allow prison medical technicians to attach a heart monitor and two intravenous lines — one for each arm — through which the lethal injections will be given.
The DC Sniper will first receive Thiopental Sodium, which will put him to sleep, then Pancuronium Bromide, to stop his breathing, then Potassium Chloride, to stop his heart. After this, his death should occur within seven to 15 minutes.
Many family members of his victims will attend John Allen Muhammed, the DC Sniper’s execution. Below is a photo of Lee Boyd Malvo, his teenage accomplice, and a video you can watch of the sniper case.
