The Islamic Republic of Iran will charge 3 US hikers who were taken into custody in July with espionage says the Iranian Judiciary. The three Americans strayed across the border of Iraq into Iran and were picked up for crossing the Iranian border illegally. The three Berkley graduates families insist that they were just hiking and accidently crossed the border.

Shane Michael Bauer, Joshua Felix Fattal, and Sarah Emily Shourd were arrested on July 31 for crossing our newfound friend of Iran’s border and will be charged with spying. Iranian President Mahmoud Amadinejad says that any country would punish someone who crossed its border illegally:

“In all countries, crossing borders would have a very heavy sentence, according to the law,” he told a news conference in Istanbul before the start of a summit of the 57-state Organisation of the Islamic Conference. “Hopefully, they will have an appropriate answer in the court and convince the judge that they did not have any intention of crossing the border illegally,” Ahmadinejad added.

Mahmoud’s right about the fact that all countries would have a very heavy sentence for illegal border crossers; that is except for the United States. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said, while at the Berlin Wall ceremonies, that Iran has no evidence that espionage was taking place. She urged the Iranians strongly to exercise compassion and release the three US hikers immediately. Yeah Hillary, that ought to do it.

Not to sound insensitive, but can I ask the obvious question? Why on God’s green earth would you be hiking in Iraq? You’re just sitting around one day and all of a sudden it sounds like a good idea to hike in the middle of a war zone surrounded by hostile countries? Just asking.

Mahmoud Amadinejad, filled with compassion and leniency himself, said that he hopes that the Iranian court will take a look at the case of the 3 US hikers with maximum leniency. Anybody else think that Iran’s thinking bargaining chip in reference to the nuclear negotiations? Just a thought.
