Here is the thread for Virginia election results in the governor’s race between Republican Bob McDonnell and Democrat Creigh Deeds. See the election returns and exit polls updated below in our live blog and participate with our election team 2009.
Winner Update 11/03/09:
Bob McDonnell wins Virginia easily as expected in the pre-election polling data. In the exit polling data seen thus far, the heavy focus of voters on the bad economy promotes his case. Bob for Jobs made an effective case that he is the jobs guy. Right Pundits projects Bob McDonnell the winner. (3:04pm PT / 6:04pm ET). Open live blog for more specifics.
Many pundits believe that Virginia is now a purple state, trending away from the GOP based on the election results last year. Indeed Obama pulled off a stunning upset in the state by seven percentage points.
But now disaffected with Obama’s policies and indecision in the face of crisis at home and abroad, the chickens appear to be coming home to roost. Bob McDonnell is expected to coast to a landslide victory over Creigh Deeds in the Virginia governor’s race. Recent polls show him heading to a 15-20 point blowout.
The luster appears to be off of the president’s star in the heartland of America. He tried hard to help Deeds, offering election advice and campaigning mightily on his behalf in the state. The White House is spinning the upcoming loss as all Creigh Deeds fault for not following the president’s strategy.
But in reality, the defeat says far less about Deeds than it does about Obama’s relatively low favorability ratings. Bob McDonnell has clearly not shied away from tying Deeds to Obama, and the president will have his head handed to him if the pre-election polls are to be believed. So what do the latest Virginia polls say?
Virginia Polls, Governor Race, Latest Polls.
(Final Polls will be updated Tuesday November 3rd, 2009.)
PPP (D) McDonnell 56, Deeds 42 (McDonnell +14) SurveyUSA McDonnell 58, Deeds 40 (McDonnell +18) Times-Dispatch/MD McDonnell 53, Deeds 41 (McDonnell +12) Daily Kos/R2000 McDonnell 54, Deeds 44 (McDonnell +10) Suffolk University McDonnell 54, Deeds 40 (McDonnell +14) Roanoke College McDonnell 53, Deeds 36 (McDonnell +17) Rasmussen Reports McDonnell 54, Deeds 41 (McDonnell +13)
And yes, local issues play a secondary role in the Virginia election but not as important a role as the other key contests on Tuesday. The Virginia governor’s race is above all other factors a referendum on the new president and his liberal policies.

tying the VA Gov race to Obama is a stretch. Deeds was a bad candidate and ran a bad race. Dragging out the McDonald’s right wing rants from grad school was dumb. While probably reflective of this guys nutty ideas (married couples can’t buy contraceptives? Please.)voters are worried about the economy.
If he’s like the last two GOP failures, he’ll wreck the Old Dominions economy and a Democrat will have to come along and fix it. Again.

Not only Virginia but our nation is in a sad state of affairs. Everyone is quick to point the finger at President Obama. Now stating that because of him supporting Deeds, this will cause his demise. How quickly we forget that everything was already in a mess prior to Obama’s election. Our previous Commander in Chief, made the decision to fight a senseless war and turn our economy upside down. Now anyone that is supported by the president elect is looked upon as being, unworthy. View Mr. Deeds for who he is and what he stands for nothing more. In reference to our President, give him the respect that he deserves. Just like the presidents before him and surely most of them did NOTHING to deserve it.

president obama knew what was handed to him when he was elected. so stop crying, his policies are going to ruin this country even more, just look at all the debt he and his congressional clowns are bestowing upon us. you cry baby lib’s can not even call your own out when they are wrong.

The one thing that I hate hearing is “What I inhearited.” That is crap. He was in office and part of the problem as well. The President does not have total control over what happens, the house and Senate have alot more to do with the end result. Step up and understand that he has been part of the problem and continues to be part of the problem. He is lucky that he has NAZI Paloozi, and all the other Dems. If the numbers were evened out and they did not have the ability to steam roll over all of the Rep’s and not even listen to anything they have to put forth to help this country. It is a sad state of affairs no matter what side you are on. Both sides have good ideas but only one side is really being heard.

So.. VA’s last 2 governors were elected thanks to the bad job George W. Bush did? Probably right, considering the fact that Bush was the worst president of all time.

Interesting analysis. Since Obama is too liberal and that explains why Deeds is going to lose this race, does that mean that every American president since Nixon (including Reagan) except Bill Clinton was too liberal?
You are aware that the party of the sitting President has only won the Virginia state house once since 1974 (Doug Wilder in 1994 during the Clinton Administration)… or are you too partisanly blind to present the truth?

We won!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ha! Ha! Ha! We saw this coming months ago, and finally it has arrived!
As far as obama inheriting this,
1) He knew what he was getting into.
2) He claimed to have all the solutions while campaigning.
3) obama’s policies have made things worse(printing 1 trillion dollars, adding to the deficit more than all other presidents before him combined(in only 9 months), now a 1.3 trillion dollar government takover of healthcare, when they can’t even get enough flu vaccine produced).
4) obama contributed to this current state of the economy by blocking the Republicans when they wanted to reform Fanny Mae & Freddy Mac while he was a senator. Now barney frank(D) who is at the center of this mess is proposing another stimulus…duh!

Well the good thing about this is how Jim Webb will respond to this. He barely won and that was only do to Allen being a racist. So Webb how is a moderate blue dog. Will probably vote against the government takeover and crap and trade.

Great win for McDonnell !

For those who say that this was just Virginia being Virginia I strongly disagree with you. Tim Kaine was popular and yet we still get a 20 point win. It’s just pure proof that obama is not doing a good job and the deep blue NJ went red by a very respectable amount as well. So I feel were seeing the comeback of the Republican party.
