Germany is enforcing a flight ban over Oktoberfest festivities in Munich following a series of threats from al-Qaeda and the Taliban in the last couple of weeks. The threats have to do with German elections that are taking place today. The attempts to intimidate the Germans into surrendering to islam don’t seem to be working very well. As is evident from the video and pictures below, they are still having a blast at Oktoberfest in spite of the threats.

I have often wondered how the Germans managed to start two world wars. The people like to party. At least the southern Germans do. The Bavarians have a fest every weekend, celebrating something for some reason, usually as an excuse to have good food and a lot of beer. They are best known for their Oktoberfest, which is held in Munich (Munchen, Deutschland, if you ever have to find it on a map).

Germany has imposed a no-fly zone over the Oktoberfest activities in Munich this weekend because of the multiple threats that have been aimed at Germany by the Taliban and al-Qaeda. The flight ban is to be in place through October 4th.

The threats have been in conjunction with the German national elections that were held today.

Bavarian Interior Minister, Joachim Herrmann, ordered the flight ban when pictures of German landmarks appeared in the series of videos and audiotapes that were put on the internet. Pictures in the videos included the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, the Oktoberfest in Munich and the Frankfurt skyline. There were also pictures of Germany’s defense minister, Franz Josef Jung, and interior minister, Wolfgang Schäuble.

The videos warned Germans that they are tempting the mujahideen to retaliate against them for their participation in the war in Afghanistan. They also are pressuring the German people to elect the only leftist party in the national elections.

Since World War II, Germany’s history and national guilt complex has resulted in a populace that prefers to take a passive role in military affairs. Their involvement in any war is highly unpopular with the people of Germany, at least on the surface. Chancellor Angela Merkel has been a very popular leader primarily because of her leadership in the current financial crisis and her avoidance of discussing Germany’s involvement in the Global War on Terrorism. She has appealed to the people to give her a second term by telling them that changing leadership now, to an unknown entity, is dangerous in such uncertain times. Its expected that in spite of the threats to attack Deutschland, Merkel will be re-elected Chancellor of Germany.

We’ll find out soon enough as the German people went to the polls today.
