Another new audio tape of Osama bin Laden has been released today. This one threatens Europe. In the video, bin Laden demands that European countries withdraw their troops from Afghanistan. This is the fourth video or audio tape from al-Qaeda that has been posted in the internet in recent days. It’s the third one this week.

Al-Qaeda has been putting out videos and audios with alarming frequency over the past couple of weeks. It is their pattern to put out a video or audio from Osama bin Laden or one of his deputies on or near the anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001. However, this year, they have been putting out multiple messages through their usual means, via the internet.

It is alarming because it implies they have grown bolder than they have been over the past eight years. It also is an indication that they are up to something. It’s been a pattern for there to be ‘increased chatter’ prior to an attack. Of course, that can be taken several ways. The very nature of a ‘Global War on Terrorism’ is to instill fear, so this would be one method of doing that. It keeps us off balance, not knowing where and when they might attack. They have patterns, and they know it as well as we do. So putting out multiple messages could be a way to instill fear. On the other hand, it could be that they are holding true to their pattern and are planning an attack soon.

Either way, it seems that the Obama’s administration strategy of not calling the War on Terror the ‘War on Terror’, but changing the name to ‘Overseas Contingency Operation’ isn’t working. Orwellian techniques might work with the Obamians, but it doesn’t seem to work well with jihadist bent on the destruction of Western civilization.

As an aside, even thought this administration changed the name of the war, my son’s deployment papers still read that he is fighting in the ‘Global War on Terrorism’. I guess changing the name is just for public propaganda and not for reality.

Al-Qaeda seems to be focusing primarily on Germany at the moment. The organization is sending their messages to all of the West, but this is the second message to Germany in the past week. With the upcoming German elections, al-Qaeda sent out a message to Germans to vote for the most liberal German party or face the consequences.

In this most recent tape, bin Laden addresses all of Europe and includes both English and German subtitles. He reminds Europeans of what happened just before the Spanish elections in 2004. The bloody bombings in Madrid got al-Qaeda the desired result with a sudden turnabout in the election and the withdrawal of Spanish troops from Iraq and Afghanistan. Then there was the London bombings in 2005.

Bin Laden called on muslims to join the ‘Islamic Holy War’. He demanded that Germany and the rest of Europe pull their troops out of Afghanistan in what he called an ‘unjust’ war led by NATO and the ‘gang in Washington’. The four-minute tape is full of propaganda, referring to civilian deaths, the leadership of the countries not caring about the young men who are dying there, the loss of men and money for no just cause.

All of this, with the underlying threat that they will suffer dire consequences if they don’t submit to al-Qaeda’s demands.
