President Obama said in his speech to congress that his healthcare plan gave no provision for illegal immigrants. He has a way to fix that; speaking to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, Mr. Obama brought up the subject of 12 million illegals and how it is imperative that they be “made legal”, so that they can receive the quality, affordable healthcare that his government plan would provide.

Republicans and Conservatives see this as a backdoor for an amnesty bill in the near future. We all remember the ruckus that was raised when the previous administration and congress tried to ram amnesty down our throats; don’t think because they’ve been quiet on the issue for a while means they’ve forgotten it. Here’s what the president said via The Washington Times:

“Even though I do not believe we can extend coverage to those who are here illegally, I also don’t simply believe we can simply ignore the fact that our immigration system is broken,” Mr. Obama said Wednesday evening in a speech to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. “That’s why I strongly support making sure folks who are here legally have access to affordable, quality health insurance under this plan, just like everybody else.

Now, a couple things about this, Obama doesn’t believe what he said here he believes. But he knows that his statement about an illegal alien healthcare provision is going to be scrutinized since the Joe Wilson incident. Thank God for Joe Wilson. Democrats have already begun the process of providing cover for President Obama on the illegal immigrant healthcare debate.

Secondly, the backdoor scenario; democrats are always looking for a backdoor to push liberal policies through. Obama figures that Hispanic groups might be mad at him for claiming that the healthcare bills have no coverage for illegals, but he knows if he gets them amnesty all will be forgiven. That’s a bigger issue for Hispanic groups.

Obama is beholden to these special interest groups like La Raza, who only exist to see that those here illegally get the same benefits of citizenship that you and I get. Joe Wilson forced the administration to backpedal on illegal immigrant healthcare, and La Raza publically said that Obama needed to come out and reassure them that those here legally would be covered.

Groups like La Raza and the democrats in Congress have been trying to change a provision in the 1996 welfare reform act that says only citizens and immigrants that have been a citizen for 5 years be able to receive benefits. Obama went a long way towards changing that with his speech to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus on Wednesday.

Illegal Immigrant healthcare coverage is a huge sticking point for Conservatives and individuals opposed to the government run option the dems have proposed. People are not going to stand for illegals receiving benefits that they themselves may have a tougher time getting due to bureaucratic nightmares that government healthcare will cause.
